Remote Temp sensor offline

Brandonk13
Community Member

Recently purchased a temperature sensor for my thermostat. Was able to get it connected and added to my account without issue. A few days later (haven't even had it a month yet), It just went offline. I've replaced the battery, and I've moved it to the same room and wall as the thermostat. It still won't reconnect.  Anything that I can do, or should I be requesting a replacement?

This is the same issue I had. The only solution for me was factory reseting the thermostat. This is clearly not great because it loses all the "learning" and has to be reconfigured. I'm trying to find another way around this because this is the second time I'm having this issue

I have the same problem, I have also seen that a factory reset is likely to solve the problem but am disappointed to hear that it happened to @Raffi30 a second time after he tried that solution...

Same issue here.  I was able to get the sensor to reconnect by resetting the thermostat but two days later the sensor is offline again.  The sensor is 8 feet away.  Nest battery voltage is 3.86V.

Yea this is very weird. At this point I don't care about the sensor since it was a free throw-in with the package I found. I'm more interested in helping Google figure out what the issue is. Mine works perfectly for about a month before losing connection, but it fails like clock work. I'm trying to work with support and offering to help debug if it's even possible to do so on my end. I asked them if I can run some kind of long term debug mode to capture what's happening. I haven't got a response yet.

My nest is connected with two wires (boiler).   I don't have a "C" wire but I've monitored the battery voltage and it's always been above 3.8v.  Some folks on reddit mentioned the sensor offline issue is due to thermostat battery voltage but I doubt that's the case.  3.8v should be plenty of voltage and there have not been any low voltage warnings.

I've two sensors that the thermostat loses at the same time and will not add back without a factory reset.  This is the 2nd time they've done them in a month,  I have another NEST at the other end of the house with a sensor and never have a problem.  It's tied to one particular thermostat.

This is very helpful information! I was able to work with support and they sent me a new sensor. Unfortunately, I can't get the new sensor to work with the thermostat either. I was going to factory reset my thermostat to give this new sensor a chance, but now that you have confirmed my suspicion of the issue being with the thermostat, I might not bother. In my case having a working remote sensor is not that important, but I also don't want to let this go.

It's a big deal to me as my thermostat is in a common area with a high ceiling.  Setting the temperature to 72 lets say makes it 78 to 80  in my bedroom so having a remote sensor lets me set the temp for the room I'm in.   I'm going to try to get Amazon to replace it as I've only had it installed two months.

Woaw that's a big difference in temp. I'm sure they'll replace it. Good luck. Just be prepared to answer a bunch of irrelevant questions and provide them with all kinds of details, relevant and irrelevant. I felt like I had to jump through hoops just to get my sensor replaced.

I contacted support and they had me do a "restart" on the thermostat and my sensors came back online.  I never noticed the "restart" in the menu but she also said you can hold the ring in for 10 seconds and it will restart.    Not sure why the one I have in my business hasn't needed a restart in 5 years or the other two thermostats I own have never hiccupped but this one has done it 3 times in two months but if a simple restart will fix it I guess it's the way to go for now.

Glad you got it working without too much trouble. I thought I tried a restart and it didn't work for me. I could be wrong. I agree with you, something is not right. In about 3 months, my thermostat required 3 factory resets to get the sensor working again. I factory reset mine again and got the new sensor working, if I have trouble, I'll try that tip to reset. I'll contact support again if anything.

Thinking there might be a software glitch causing these issues.  They need to figure it out soon.

My new sensor has been working since Feb 24th. Well over a month. Never had this much time functioning with the old sensor. The other thing to note is that I am not using the sensor schedule feature any more. In the past when I did have trouble I was using the feature. So now I'm not sure if the new sensor fixed it, not using that feature fixed it, or a combination of the two. Anyone having this issue using that feature? Check to see if there is any difference if you stop using sensor schedule and switch sensors manually when needed.

Ok, so shortly after my OP, I deleted and readded the sensor. It was there but wasn't reporting. Whatever. Today, I opened the nest app to switch my mode, and found the temp reporting in for the sensor. Wild. We'll see how well this works.

Hey everyone,

It looks like we've slowed down here. We'll be closing up the thread in the next day unless anyone else has any input or needs anything else. If so, just let me know and we can keep this open a bit longer.

Thanks,
Jeff

I replaced the sensor, paired it with the thermostat and have not had any connection issues for the past few months.

Thanks for the input and explanation of your fix, ebjustin. It's always great to see people get these issues worked out and find out what worked.

Once more, is there anyone else looking for help on this?

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi! I have a Nest thermostat and 3 sensors that I purchased about 2 months ago.  All was working well until last week when all 3 sensors went offline. I tried everything like you did but then I saw on this forum to reset to factory. Since I tried everything else, I removed the sensors from my app and then did a factory reset on the thermostat on the wall. I also rebooted my internet modem and wifi router.

Then I started the set up again from scratch and it worked just fine.  Has been working for a couple of days now so fingers crossed!

Hi all, I just wanted to add my issue into the mix for information purposes. I have had my sensor for about 2 years, and it has worked flawlessly. Then about a month ago, it went offline. I have done a "restart," a "reset," changed the battery and removed the sensor from the app, and re-install it. Every time it ends up re-connecting for about a day or two but eventually goes offline again. My next move is to buy another one and see if that works. I find it odd that it has worked fine for two years, and now all of a sudden, I'm having this issue.

We shall see if maybe the sensor just went bad.

Having problems since a month where the thermostat forgets that it needs to use the sensor to set the temperature. It instead picks up the thermostat itself.

I checked the app and the sensor seems connected.

Only way to make the thermostat 'remeber' the sensor again is the test the connection.

Thanks for following up. My best thermostat and sensor are about 6 feet apart separated by a wooden wall and no electronics.

I don't see a battery alert in the app.

I think the only thing left is to 'reset' the sensor which I'll try shortly.

I am not sure why that would happen since this sensor did work well for me for well over a year.

I have an issue where the remote sensor goes offline, then a few hours later it reconnects. The battery is fresh and it is only 10 feet away.  This is frustrating as I want Nest to use the temperature of the location where the remote sensor is. I've tried resetting the Nest and it continues to happen

I feel there might be a software bug. It would be great if we could submit a bugreport that could be looked at.

My Nest Thermostat goes offline about twice a month. Everything else is online. It says it's supposed to keep searching that when my wifi comes back online, it will reconnect. However, my wifi did not go offline. This is my thermostat at work, not home. I don't go to the office that often because I work mostly from home. But others are there. Which means I have to make a special trip to try to fix the thermostat. I would very much appreciate Google fixing this issue. We shouldn't have to continuously deal with an apparent flaw in this system. When will the newer model be coming out? Hopefully soon! I can't take it any longer.
