Restarting/updating loop 3rd generation Nest Thermostat

Nest is in a continuous restarting/updating loop.  For weeks.  I’m cold.  I tried to delete it off the nest app and now I can’t add it back because I can’t access the security code.  I checked my WiFi connection and it is not connected.  But I can’t connect because I can’t reload the thermostat to the Nest app.  I’ve tried to hold it to reboot and it just goes back to the same loop.  I tried to place in back on the charger with no luck.  I’ve had this thermostat for only 3 years.   Please tell me I don’t have a $250 paper weight.

Hi @frustrated13,

Thanks for posting on the community page. I'm sorry to hear that your Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd gen is stuck in a restart loop and that you're having difficulties adding it to the Nest app. I appreciate the information shared and your troubleshooting efforts. No worries, let's work together to get this fixed. To help me with that, I have some questions for you:

  • Could you tell me how long you pressed the display to reset your Nest thermostat?
  • Is your Nest thermostat securely connected to its base?

Also, let's try the following steps:

  • Remove your Nest thermostat display from the base.
  • Check that all of the wires on your Nest thermostat are fully inserted.
  • The connector button should stay in a pressed-down state on any connectors that have wires in them. If not, remove the wire and check the tip.
  • If the tip has corrosion, is bent, or is less than 1/3 inch of copper is exposed, straighten and/or re-strip the end of the wire.
  • Press the connector button, and re-insert the wire. Push the wire in as far as it goes. Make sure the button stays in a pressed-down state. This indicates that the customer properly seats the wire.

Please feel free to reply to this post with any relevant information.

Regards,
Jonathan
