Hi everyone

We moved into a rental property in July, we are now setting up the nest app when looking on the settings before downloading the app it said to return to factory settings then started to connect to the app now it is not allowing a full set up as the thermostat is not connected to WiFi have tried to reset the device but it just goes straight back to the home phone icon again

can anyone help? This belongs to our landlord but hasn’t got another account registered to it so I really don’t know how else to proceed

I think you’ll need your landlord to remove the thermostat from their Google account first. After that, you can set it up with your Wi-Fi and Nest app.

Hi @Morganbrianna28,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I understand that since you moved into a new rental property, you've tried several troubleshooting steps like performing a factory reset on your Nest Thermostat, which is greatly appreciated. Despite all your efforts, the thermostat is still showing the house icon. I'm here to help!

I would like to ask you some questions to provide you with the most relevant information about that:

  • Which Nest Thermostat do you have? How to tell which Nest Thermostat you have.
  • You mentioned you did a factory reset. How did you do it?
  • The thermostat isn't allowing a full setup. Could you show me what you see on the screen when you try to set it up?

In the meantime, I'd like to share some troubleshooting steps that might help you:

  • Check the wires if they are fully inserted.
    • Turn off power to your system at the breaker box, fuse box or system switch. This helps prevent damage to your system and keeps you safe.
    • Remove the thermostat from the wall.
    • Check the wires to see if they are inserted properly into the base.
  • Restart your Nest thermostat.
    • Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E:
      • Press and hold the thermostat ring down until the display turns off.
      • Release the ring, then press it once to begin startup again.
    • Nest Thermostat.
      • Pull the display off the base.
Remove the batteries and put them back in, then reattach the display to the base.

@junebennett, thanks for the suggestion, it's a good idea to try!

I’m having the same problem.  Did a soft reset by holding the outside button down.  Resets and just has the home icon.  I even removed the thermostat from the wall, plugged it into a charger and waited a few hours to see if that helped.  This all happened when I connected it to WiFi. I believe I have the latest version of the thermostat
