Stuck in "Thermostat needs to restart. Be back in a bit" loop.

I've had a 3rd generation Nest learning Thermostat for 6+ months with no problem.  In the last couple of days, It no longer works.

I am not able to control it at all but it keeps restarting (Google image appears) and the first message that pops up is regarding incorrect date and time with the option to set it.  I can't make any selections and it quickly changed to the following messsge; Thermostat needs to restart.  Be back in a bit.  It then dies and the light starts flashing red.  It will repeat this process every so often but it never actually resets.

I do have a c-wire connected but I charged it overnight just in case but it didn't solve the problem.  I changed my filter and checked the fuse and nothing is blown.

I've tried resetting it by holding down for 10 seconds but it does nothing.  Not sure where to go from here.  Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks 🙏

Me too, took me a while to install the thermostat then doesn’t work at all. It’s going to be no heater tonight which sucks

I called customer service and they identified that this is a defective battery issue. Ended up I order an replacement for the thermostat and wait for another 3weeks. And I’m not satisfied with the way they deal with replacements. Because they only have limited brand new product in stock, so you replacement could either be a brand new one, or a refurbished one. I’d say mostly like a refurbished one otherwise who gives that disclaimer. I even doubt the brand new one I got was a refurbished one. But anyways, the replacement is working fine now, but it will be my last and only Nest product I guess.

Hello Jake,

I am experiencing the identical problem as the user Meliss85. I have experienced no problems with my before now. It hasn’t worked for a little over a week. I thought it may have been no C wire. Due to when I got the Nest I was informed did not need one. However, a friend had indicated it might give me problems. So when this occurred I figured just get the wiring set up properly for it. However, that has not worked.

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Melissa

Hey Melissa,

I reported the same issue here and and followed up by troubleshooting with a Google rep on Chat via the Google Help Center link at the bottom of this page. Took an hour before the rep finally conceded it was a unit issue. They replaced the unit under warranty (quick turnaround) and the new one is installed and working perfectly.

Good luck!

Kaylie

Yeah, there eas a faulty batter in my brand new unit.  I had to jump through the hoops but they replaced the device for me.

There is 2 options when replacing…

1.  Send in your defective divice and they will check it and then send you a new one.  You will be without a thermostat during the period.

2.  They will send you the new one first…but they put a hold on your account for the full amount.  Once you return the old one the hold is removed.  You only have like 10-14 days to send it back so keep that in mind.

they will send you a shipping label so you don’t have to pay shipping in either case

My google nest I purchased due to my old thermostat not working is also not working. It sounds like it’s a battery issue on a brand new device so what do I do until I ship this off and wait for another one?

Hi Jake, I still have an issue and am experiencing an identical problem. How do I get the replacement if that's what it would take for the nest stuck in reboot cycle with blank screen and red blinking light.

I’m having the same issue. The thermostat keeps restarting and turning off. What should I do?

I’m having the same issue with my google nest 3 rd generation. How would I move forward with getting this issue resolved? It’s cold outside and I’d like for my home to be warm. It’s been two days already.

It's a battery issue. Google replaced my thermostat under warranty.

I am also having this issue and it started happening 2 months ago. How long is the warranty good to replace?

2 years for a learning thermostat

I’m having the exact same issue as the original post. The Nest was purchased from Best Buy and  installed in September 2021. How do I get a replacement?

I am having very similar issue. I need a replacement too. I got it from PSE as a energy efficiency program but got it installed after few years last November. It worked fine until end of April. Now, its getting in a constant reboot or blank

I am having the same issue now over a year now, I keep charging it manually because I thought it was the battery for sure. However charging it manually even overnight only charge the battery 25% and then it works for about 15-25mins then it’s show the ‘Restarting’ message. This is annoying me , and I had to use space heater during winter and now fans now that it’s near summer . Help !

There is no fix, you need a new one, your battery is faulty.

I realize that and spoke to customer service and they are replacing it even though outside of warranty. They checked and saw I had these issues from 6months after installation.  So I  am grateful that it’s being replaced

Just happened to us!  What’s the best, quickest way to resolve?

Contact Google. Be prepared for an hour-long online chat to troubleshoot before they agree to send a replacement. Worked for me. Good luck!

We just spent ~2 hours with Google support over the past 2 days on our Nest thermostat (Gen 3 learning thermostat, purchased and installed in 2018 failed now in April 2023). It kept restarting, obviously because the battery was bad. I had recharged it when I contacted Google. They insisted I recharge it again for 5 minutes, then try it again. It repeated the issue. They insisted I recharge it for 10 minutes. It repeated the issue. They insisted I charge it for one hour. It repeated the issue.

Now, they're saying it just won't work because ours doesn't have a C wire (wasn't a problem when I purchased it, installed it per Google's instructions and used it for the past 5 years), and even if we did have a C wire, we'd have to replace it anyway because there's no way to replace the battery on a Gen 3.

One of the principles behind Google/ Alphabet is it's supposed to make technology that makes our lives better. This device is a total failure in that regard. Our legacy thermostats lasted for ~20 years and didn't have to be thrown away when the batteries went bad, because of designs so poor that they didn't allow for a battery replacement.  We're getting a non-nest thermostat now. Epic fail for Google on the Gen 3 Learning Thermostat. What a horrible idea!

This product is not the best because there is no phone support, and no response from Google

Nest thermostat is in a loop , it will connect for about 1 minute and go right off again.

I am having same issue. For some days, it charged with usb cable, now even that is stored and stuck in a loop with “ it is restarting in a bit” but never restarts and gets switched off. Where can I find replacement? How can I check what’s wrong?

I am having this problem too. Who do we speak to to arrange a replacement?
