Sudden inescapable H71 error

My 3rd Gen Nest Thermostat no longer connects to the base to control the boiler no matter how close I take it to it and even after holding the button untill it reboots. I can manually turn the boiler on with the base button but this is a real pain as the boiler and base plate is locked in the cellar.

 

It's been working fine for over 6 months and occasionally I would get this problem but I would be able to reconnect it easily. Now it never reconnects.

  1. Select Help message > Let's get started
  2. Select Nest Learning Thermostat > 3rd Gen Learning Thermostat
  3. Select H, then type 71 > Continue > Next
  4. Follow the steps on screen
