Thermostat reading too high (~10 degrees)

I have a nest learning thermostat that has been installed about 2 weeks, and worked perfectly until today. It is reading the ambient temp about 10 degrees high. It’s down to about 63 in the house, the heat doesn’t come one because the ambient temp is reading 73. The metal ring is slightly warm to the touch. 

On another thread I saw a reference to wifi heating up the unit. How do I turn off wifi?  I tried in settings and it only gives me the option to choose a different network. 

So far I’ve restarted the thermostat and switched to the 2.4 wifi network and the false high temp seems to be dropping. 

This is a forced hot air/AC system, 4 wires.

 For reference, my thermometer body is reading at 71.7 vs the air temp at 63.6.

Behind your nest thermostat, behind the back plate, where the wires come out, is there a small hole or a larger hole? If you don’t seal that hole, sometimes air flowing between the walls yes it does this, can’t blow warm or cool air in through the back and affect the temperature reading of the nest thermostat. The nest thermostat uses three separate thermistors to determine the temperature. Also, if the battery is weak and being charged, this can sometimes cause a slightly elevated temperature. Typically though it’s only one or 2°.

@CharlesMMM, I appreciate you posting a photo of your thermometer next to your Nest Thermostat showing inaccurate temperature readings. I'd love to know more about this.

 

  1. Please check your thermostat's signal strength value by going to Technical Info > Network.
  2. Restart your thermostat by pressing and holding its screen for 10 seconds until it shuts down to refresh.
  3. Enable sunblock under the Nest Sense settings.
  4. Cover the wall with a duct seal compound.
  5. Check if the thermostat is near a heat source.
  6. Disconnect your thermostat for 24 hours from the reset settings, then reconnect your account.
    1. This will remove the thermostat from an account and disable the Wi-Fi network.
