Thermostat with 7 wires with 1 not installed

Ccasey

I've been having issues with AC since moving in with a nest already installed. The wiring doesn't match the colors in the app and there is a 7th wire not used (orange). Any help will be appreciated. I don't want to just start switching wires

You need to go to the equipment and verify what each wire goes to there, they may be correct but they did not follow standard color code.

The extra wire is normal in most systems they ran a cable with more wires than needed.

It looks like a heat pump system with auxiliary heat.

What exactly is the problem? Does the AC fan and the outside unit kick on when you request AC?  Does the heat indoor fan and outdoor unit kick on if you request heating?

There could be a problem with the system itself, not the Nest.

Heat pumps have a reversing valve that changes the system from Heat to Cool and those can go bad so without knowing exactly what symptoms you are having its not possible to diagnose without more information.
