Thoroughly disgusted w/ Nest thermostat

Using on-line Nest instrs I cannot reset to obtain a code to set up a previously owned home’s Nest thermostat.  NOTHING !

Also, have nat gas heat in same air handler, but don’t see from messing with Nest thermostat how to turn on & control the heat.
