Hello,
I cannot connect a second Learning Thermostat to my Nest app. Read through several threads on this error message and tried the options gathered from each. At the start, I had two a/c units each with a Learning thermometer connected to my Nest Account. I added a second Learning thermostat onto one of the units (which should have been third thermostat in my app). It kept giving me the TD error.
So far I've tried:
- Reconnecting the thermostat to wifi
- confirmed iphone 13 was on same network
- moved a current thermostat right next to it to "assist"
- Removed the first thermostat on the unit from my Nest account and tried to connect to the new one
Nothing has worked and I couldn't get the first one from the last step mentioned back on so now I have no thermostats for that unit in my app! Now I am left with
Unit 1: Thermostat connected to Nest App
Unit 2: Two thermostats that cannot be connected to the app, both showing the same error.
What can I do?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is incredibly frustrating. Thank you.

Success! I got on the Google Nest Support Chat and the customer service rep was able to walk me through the steps to add not just the second but also the third thermostat to my app. The key was restarting the thermostats and making sure the assisting thermostat was close enough. I had tried the second part but not the first part. So the steps were:
1. Confirm phone/tablet are on the same network as the thermostat and all phone/tablet not connected to any bluetooth devices.
2. Restart the original (and only thermostat connected to my app)
3. Restart the thermostat I needed to add to my Nest app.
4. Hold the original thermostat close to the new and redo the pairing steps from the app. Presto, it paired.
5. Repeated steps 3 and 4 with my third thermostat and it paired no problem.
(Note: the next step was going to be to restart my router and retry if the first attept did not work.)
Hope this helps someone out there!

FWIW, I more or less have the same problem. I moved into a house with two Nest Learning Thermostats, each controlling a separate HVAC system (one upstairs, one downstairs). I can get either linked to my Nest account via the app, but not both. I've tried all of the workarounds you have listed with no joy. Has anyone been successful in linking two Nest Learning Thermostats, running two separate HVAC systems, to the same Nest account? If so, let's hear how "you done it"!

That’s the most frustrating part! I had two thermostats on my app for two weeks before I tried to add the third one. I shouldn’t have tried removing one to add the new one. I gave myself a big forehead slap for that one. 😞 I’m still searching through the forum to find an answer that works for me. For the price of these thermostats, I would think we could get some support.

For step 4, am I supposed to remove the face of my thermostat already on the app and hold it near the new one? Why on earth is it dependent on an already added device? This is the most frustrating design I've encountered and seems completely unnecessary when my device is connected to my home wifi already.

Hi yamy,
I'm sorry if you have to go through this and I appreciate your efforts doing all the steps — let's see what's going on.
A few questions: how many Nest devices do you have? How far away from the router is the device? Also, Is it a brand-new setup, too?
I'll look forward for your response.
Thanks,
Mark
