Unable to connect dot sensor to thermostat.

I just bought and installed a nest learning thermostat 3rd generation and a nest dot temperature sensor. I’m having issue connecting the sensor. I keep getting a “can’t connect to the thermostat. Find a spot closer to the thermostat and try again” message. On my 5th attempt, the last 3 with the dot sensor less that 2 feet from the thermostat and all with the same results. 

any suggestions? And yes, I pulled the battery tab and checked the battery charge to make sure that wasn’t the issue.
