Unwanted Eco mode activity

I’ve noticed more than once that Google is turning the Eco mode on without my permission. Most recently, it occurred after Google posted a notification in the Home app, proposing Eco mode, and stating the benefits would be seen within three weeks. There was no Opt-in or Opt-out options.

We’ve been experiencing higher-than-normal temps. I can afford the **bleep** electricity and shouldn’t have to monitor my thermostats to make sure they don’t default to 77 degrees!  If it continues, I will rip the **bleep** thermostats out and replace them with a brand that doesn’t respects my autonomy.

Same happened to me this past week. Someone please tell me how to get this ECO bussiness of  the way. All I want is for the T-stat to say where I put it, thats all I ask.

Yes, please fix and give an option to turn off! You’re going to kill my dogs! Very upsetting coming home to 88 degree with dogs panting. Come on! Why would this turn off every hour anyway. Not the smartest thing to have this as your default mode. Keep off unless we turn on!!!!

I have a 2 year old upstairs that goes to sleep at 8-8:30. It's very frustrating when this eco disaster kicks in and it's 82 in his room. I have a brand new ac unit for upstairs and it takes 2+ hours to get his room down to 72. I like Google thermostat but I swear if this doesn't stop, I'm going with ecobee, or Honeywell or whoever the hell. I knew it was going to happen and I purposely set the thermostat at 5 to be at 72 thinking I could have his room cool by the time I got home. It's 8:12 and his room is 81. Pathetic and I have 3 nests thermostats.

Which Nest Thermostat do you all have?

Mine are four years old (Model 3.4). Before that, we had the original one, which we replaced when we installed new HVAC equipment.

I don’t remember the model for the Thursday that I have but it’s the $99 one. The non-learning

UPDATE:  The stats are continuing to revert to Eco mode even though I confirmed that normal cooling mode—rather than Eco mode—was selected. Also confirmed that assigned schedules were set at desired temps.

Just discovered how to submit feedback via the app, including a screen capture and system log. The web failed to describe the feedback route correctly and sent me here instead.

2nd UPDATE:  Found the culprit. It’s the Google Home App.  It is overriding both the thermostat mode setting AND the Nest app.  May have to delete the thermostats from the Google Home App until they correct the behavior.

I was checking the thermostats’ mode setting and temps and discovered one had reverted to Eco mode again. I then double-checked the thermostat and Nest app and neither showed Eco mode as being on. The temp was correct when I checked, but by evening the temp had climbed to 77 because of Eco mode on the Google Home App.

Hi TouchOfGray,

Sorry about the difficulty and confusion you had with the Home app and the Eco mode settings. I'm happy that you found the cause of the issue and I appreciate you sharing that here. It does get a little tricky when you're running things through two apps that can have overlapping settings. As you found your answer, is there anything else you might need before I mark this one as resovled?

Thanks,

Jeff

Overlapping settings wouldn’t be an issue if Google had fully migrated all of the Nest products abilities to Google Home. That said, it wasn’t conflicting settings—the settings were the same in both apps. Eco mode was being triggered by the Google Home app for no apparent reason.

I understand what you're saying, TouchOfGray. The long-term goal is to have Home handle all smart products in the household and act as a single source for all management. Things aren't quite to that point yet, but that's where it's all headed. I can pass along your comments to our internal teams so that they understand where current challenges with integration are affecting users. I appreciate your feedback on the product and app integration.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi everyone,

Just one quick final check in here since we have an explanation here. We'll be locking the thread in the next 24 hours, but if you still need help, I would be happy to keep it open. If there's more we can do, just let me know.

Thanks,
Jeff
