Hi RenSmith,

Thanks for reaching out here in the community! I’d be happy to help with your concerns about how to install the E and W2 wires on the Nest thermostat.

Based on the information, your system is compatible with all generations of Nest Learning Thermostats. Usually, the E wire goes into the star (*) terminal and the W2 wire into the Aux W2 terminal. For reference, you can check out these articles: Nest thermostat star connector and Identify a thermostat wire.

To effectively assist you, I'd like to ask for the following information:

  • What is the model of your Nest thermostat? Here’s a helpful article about how to identify your thermostat model.
  • What type of HVAC system do you have (conventional or heat pump system)?
  • Do you have auxiliary heat or emergency heat on your HVAC system?
  • Would you mind sharing a picture of the previous wiring installation and the current one on the Nest thermostat?

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
