Wiring a Nest Thermostat

I have a nest thermostat and have connected the W and R wires from the gas valve on my furnace.  I have a 24volt power supply. What terminals on the Nest do I use for those two wires?

Hello MarkB_748,

It's nice to see you here in the Google Nest Community Forum! I'd be happy to shed some light on the situation here.

It's important to ensure proper wiring to avoid any issues with your Nest Thermostat. Typically, the W (heat) and R (power) wires from your gas valve on the furnace should be connected to specific terminals on the Nest thermostat. Here's a general guide:

  • R Wire (Power): Connect the R wire from your furnace to the R terminal on the Nest Thermostat. This wire provides the 24-volt power supply needed for the thermostat.
  • W Wire (Heat): Connect the W wire from your furnace to the W terminal on the Nest Thermostat. This wire controls the heating function.

Make sure to turn off the power to your furnace before making any connections to ensure safety. Additionally, consult the Nest Thermostat installation guide or manual specific to your Nest Thermostat model, as the terminal labels may vary slightly. If you encounter any uncertainties or face difficulties during the installation process, it's advisable to install a Nest Power Connector or a Common wire to deliver constant power and avoid power issues in the future.

Feel free to let us know if you have more questions in mind.

Warm regards,
Mark
