I am quite sure this is a simple error on my part. The system is a heat pump. The previous thermostat did not automatically switch between heating and cooling. The user had to select either heating or cooling. The intention of having the Nest Learning thermostat is to be able to set a temperature range.
Here is the original wiring.
For certainty the wiring was:
G = green
W = black
C = brown
Y = blue
R = red
I connected the Nest Learning as follows:
Green to G
Black to W1
Brown to C
Blue to Y1
Red to RW
At the time of installation, the temperature in the condo was 25° C. After setup, I tried to cool the condo to 22° C. Instead, the temperature climbed to 28°. (My wife was not impressed with my “home improvement”.)
I moved the red wire to RW and tried again. The temperature climbed to 29°.
I disconnected the Nest Learning thermostat and reconnected the original thermostat. I set it to cooling and the temperature to 23°. The heat pump promptly cooled the condo to 23°.
I’m quite sure someone will be able to tell me how I need to correct the wiring connections. For that I thank you.

Hi EDG,
Thanks for posting here in the Community forum, and I'm sorry to hear about the situation. I want to check if you are still in need of any help. If so, first, are you located in North America or Europe? What is the make and model of your HVAC system? Also, I see it here that your previous thermostat is configured as a conventional heating and cooling system and not a heat pump since there is no wire that was connected to the OB terminal (the terminal designated for a heat pump). In this case, could you help us with a photo of your furnace control board so I can take a look at how the wires are connected to it?
I'll look forward to your response.
I appreciate your help, @PNWHVACGRL.
Best,
Zoe

I was correct. It was a simple error on my part that I figured out.
There was one bank of terminals. There were two rows of codes: one row above the terminals (for a conventional heating system) and the other below the terminals (for a heat pump).
I was reading the conventional codes, not the heat pump codes. I have now corrected my Nest connections correctly for a heat pump and the thermostat is working.
