“Your thermostat wasn’t fully set up”

TheFlak
Community Member

I can’t seem to control the thermostat from the Google app. Every time I go to control it, I get the thermostat not fully set up error.

I’ve tried hard resetting and factory resetting and re adding everything several times. Same error message.

when I am adding wifi and finishing the device, it says device added and ready, but then cuts to an error screen. Then I can never connect through the app. The thermostat works just like an old school one if I walk upstairs and control it by hand, but that’s not why I have a nest, hoping to be able to control it with my phone.

Hey! So adding an entirely new home fixed this. I just have two separate homes set up on my Google app for the same home, but at least I can control the thermostat again.

Hi @TheFlak,

Did you try power cycling your router already? 🙂
And do you use some kind of VPN service on your iOS device? If so please try turning it off before setting it up.

Yea I’ve restarted the router and don’t use a VPN.

Hi folks,

@RXShorty, thanks for the help!

@TheFlak, thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your Nest Thermostat. I'd love to know more about this and I have a few questions:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • What's the exact message are you getting after you set up the Nest Thermostat?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi there,

It is a newer nest (replaced an old one that stopped working). It’s white with a mirrored front.

The message is “Your thermostat wasn’t fully set up”.

I’ve tried setting it up half a dozen times. Full factory reset, the whole shebang. It always says this not set up message after it seems to be at the last step of the process.

Hi TheFlak,

Thanks for the response. To isolate the issue, could you try setting up your Nest Thermostat to a new home structure? Here's how to create a new home structure in the Google Home app:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. At the top, tap Add.
  3. Tap Create new home.
  4. Follow the steps.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi @TheFlak

Appreciate that you are sharing your solution! 😊

It looks like something is broken at your other home. Maybe worth a shot moving the other things over to the new home. Again thank you for sharing!

I have an ERROR message that reads .google.sso error -206. I've rebooted, scanned, disconnected etc etc. and am quite frustrated at this point.  Nothing seems to be working.. I have a Gen 2 Nest Thermostat. Any insight is appreciated!

Hi Thee,

Thanks for sharing. I'd love to know more about this. What troubleshooting steps have you done so far? Have you tried doing a factory reset on your Nest Thermostat?

Thanks,

Edward

I did everything and turned out I inly needed to ‘find’ the 6 digit code that was under the QR code that was on the back of the thermostat!  I am installing a freebe from our provider (PSEG) so not the latest greatest Nest but it finally works!  Now on to zone 2!

I will so far so good!  Just lost a lot of daylight. Tomorrow’s another day and I’ll connect that zone then. At least now I know why the app didn’t work.
