migrating from Nest app to google nest

If I migrate from Nest app to signing with Google nest do I need to be in the house where the Nest thermostats are or can I do this remotely? Right now I can not sign in with the Nest app.  Is there any chance that the thermostats could shut down in changing to to Google? It is 5 degrees outside & I am 12 hrs from this vacation home.
