nest thermostat battery

My nest thermostat went black the other day. My nest app says there is no power to it. I called my HVAC company and they said I need to replace the battery. I researched this on the internet and saw that the battery can be re-charged or replaced. I need to know what my plan of action is here. First try re-charging, then replace the battery if that does not work? The you-tube videos suggest that replacing the battery may not be easy. Some batteries may be better than others. Also, I am going on vacation soon and don't want to mess with this until I get back. Will there be issues with syncing or re-setting things when I get back into this?

It's possible that the issue with your Nest thermostat is related to the battery, but it's also possible that there's another issue at play.

If you haven't already, try recharging the battery first to see if that resolves the issue. If the battery is low, the Nest thermostat may not function properly. You can do this by removing the Nest thermostat from the wall and plugging it into a USB charger using a micro-USB cable. It may take a few hours to fully charge.

If recharging the battery doesn't work, then replacing the battery may be necessary. It's true that replacing the battery can be difficult, especially if you're not familiar with the process. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, it may be best to hire a professional to replace the battery for you.

As for syncing or resetting things when you return from vacation, it's possible that you may need to re-connect the Nest thermostat to your Wi-Fi network or re-register it with your Nest account if the battery has been completely drained. However, this should be a straightforward process that can be done through the Nest app. Just make sure to have your Wi-Fi network information and Nest account login credentials handy.

Hi kmh,

Thanks for posting here in the Community forum, and I'm sorry to hear about the situation.

A few questions: What type of Nest Thermostat do you have? Since you already charged the Nest Thermostat, for how long did it last? Also, can you help me with your Nest Thermostat's power reading?

  1. To open the Quick View menu, press the thermostat’s ring.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Turn the ring to highlight Technical Info then press the ring to select it.
  4. Select Power.
    • Battery
    • VOC
    • VIN
    • IIN

I'll look forward to your response.

Thanks for your help, @sarasotawash

Best.
