Thanks, only issue is that this says press until the screen turns off.  Unfortunately, it has never turned on.  I only have a small green light that blinks at the top.

Nest Thermostat E or Nest Learning Thermostat

  1. Press the thermostat down until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds), then release.
  2. Press and release the ring to turn it back on and complete the restart process. You'll see the Nest logo when it begins to start up. The screen will turn on as it finishes.

You can still restart the display by looking at the green flashing light and press the display, and keep pressed until you see the green light stop flashing, and you should see an orange light very briefly. Then release. About 10 seconds.

You say first time setup, if this is a new one just return it, as many thermostats that have been sitting around for a while can suffer from very flat batteries. Another check is place your ear on the display, and see if you can hear a clicking/buzzing noise.

Its new, but 2nd generation bought off craigslist so Im stuck with it.  I will try the restart as you described.  Did that before, but never noticed the green light stopping and flickering orange.

The green light has been flashing for about 5 days, and have tried all the other suggestions.  If I leave off the base for a day and put back.  The orange light returns and then green after an hour or so.  Should I try replacing the battery?

Battery on the Learning model is an internal lithium battery.

There are videos on youtube about taking it apart and replacing it but Nest does not support battery replacement or sell the batteries.

Hello there,

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Thanks for helping, @Houptee, @Frustratedddd, and @Printerwall.

@frontrowfanatic, I'm sorry to hear that you're having issues with your thermostat because it won't turn on even after charging it for over an hour. I'd love to know more about this.

To clarify, could you share a photo of your thermostat's wiring? Also, please try connecting it to a computer and see if it recognizes it. Let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Mark

Here is what my wiring looks like, which is the same as my other 2 Nest Thermostats.  one 2nd gen and 1 3rd gen.  Both of my other ones work on this as well their own.

I connected to a computer and nothing happened.  computer doesn't recognize it, and nothing happens on the thermostat screen.  Same when I plug a micro usb wall plug into it.

only time anything happens on the unit is that when I attach it to any of the base plates i have installed, the small light at the top starts solid green, then starts flashing.  the screen never comes on.  I left it flashing for 5 days and it never changed.IMG-5278.jpg

Hello frontrowfanatic,

Thanks for letting me know and for sharing your thermostat wiring diagram. Big help!

Because it has an integrated display, the Nest Learning Thermostat does not require jumper wires. Please remove the jumper wire and leave the power wire connected to the RC terminal. Ensure that the power from your HVAC system is turned on at the breaker box, and then put the display back on.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

Regards,

Mark

Hi everyone,

@frontrowfanatic how's it going with your Nest Thermostat? Were you able to see the steps suggested above? In case you have an update, you know where to find us.

I appreciate the help, Mark, Frustratedddd, Printerwall and Houptee.

Can my nest start my heater if i don't connect a hot wire to RH?

So far my nest doesn't do anything buy blink green for as long as 5 days, until i disconnected it.

Hi frontrowfanatic,

Only dual transformer systems use separate power sources for heating and cooling (Rc and Rh). Your system would still work with your heater without using a jumper wire. Please take a look at this article and let us know if you need more help.

Regards,

Mark

I removed the rc to rh wire and reinstalled the thermostat and there was no change.  just blinks green forever.

Hey there,

I'm sorry to hear the issue still persists. Can you try the steps in this guide? Charge your thermostat display via USB for at least an hour before connecting it back to its base.

Please let me know if that helps, or if the issue still persists.

Thanks,

Mark
