why does my new nest thermostat have AAA batteries? and why aren't they rechargeable?

if i put rechargeable batteries inside will they get some juice to recharge? Why are they even there? Backup? If I lose power my HVAC won't work, so why would I need a backup? Do I even need batteries? I hate to remove them as a trial, as it isn't the sturdiest placement into my drywall, and I really don't want to be pulling on the cover too often, worried I might loosen it from the drywall. Considering returning product. Thanks.

If your Nest has batteries, you have a basic Nest Thermostat.  Only the Nest Learning Thermostat and the Nest E Thermostat have built in lithium batteries.  The batteries are only used to maintain the configuration memory of the thermostat. If your thermostat is wired with a C, common wire, it will use the HVAC power to run the thermostat and use the batteries to protect the memory of the thermostat when the power is off. And you are correct. If the power is off, your HVAC system isn’t gonna work anyways.

Hi there,

Thanks for getting back to us, @MichaelB3. The Nest Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E have built-in batteries, and we'd suggest not replacing them, as it may result in damaging them internally. Also, for the Nest Thermostat 2020, use only high-quality 1.5 V AAA alkaline batteries from a known manufacturer. Rechargeable batteries aren't recommended, as they won't suffice to stabilize the power to your thermostat.

Please take a look at this article and let us know if you need more help.

Mark
