Can I add a router to a mesh network and then have it route to a cabin.

We have a working mesh network but we need to get signal down to  a cabin that is my husband's office.   There is a wired connection that runs underground but the ethernet cable is in a strange location an upstairs bedroom and the  fiber into the house is in the basement.     What I want to do is put mesh access point next to the cable that runs to the cabin.   then  a router on the other end to extend the house network to the cabin.    My husband is a manager and does a lot of meeting over hangouts so a  good connection is imperative.     If anyone has any thought on if this will work or if I shoudl try something else I would love to hear it.

Also we live in Vermont and the buried cable is under a foot of snow somewhere so I can try to trace the wires right now.

Hi Svava,

You definitely have an interesting use case here. While you can run that wired connection just fine, having a wireless signal on the other side of that ethernet line would run you into some issues. First, even when hardwired, the individual access points communicate wirelessly with one another and not through the ethernet connection. As a result, the access point you set up out in the cabin would not see the rest of the wireless network and would not communicate back home to your main router. Unfortunately you would need to run a separate router and network in the cabin to have a wireless signal properly set up. If you have any more questions, just let me know.

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

Thank you so much for that answer.    I plugged it in and it worked with the ancient existing router (Non-Google non a netgear either which surprised me.)  that is on the other end.   My plan has been to buy a router for the cabin and set up a mesh Wifi network down there as well.    My dumb questions is with Mesh routers on either end  of the wire can I made it part of the Hermond network (the main network in the house)  or would best practices be to come up with a new mesh network for just the cabin?   I can try both but as we are so far out in the mountains we have no cell signal and depend on the wireless for our Google Fi it is tricky to do a lot of testing.
Our ECFiber connection comes into the main house and the router that connects to the cabin runs through the house mesh to get to the Fiber connection.    My knowledge set on how to setup routers and switches is old and dated and from a time before adaptive learning and when you had to write explicit rules by hand so your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your time and your advice.   My husband can work in the cabin so we are in no rush but I really would love to appropriately updating all of the equipment.
