Comcast IPv6

mobilepunk

I have an Arris Surfboard SB8200 which if it has a device connected directly is able to obtain an IPv6 address from Comcast without an issue. Once I connect the Google Wifi and enable IPv6 I am able to receive a host IPv6 route but not an IPv6 gateway. Has anyone been able to fix this problem ? .. Connecting any other gateway other than Google Wifi works fine - i.e. obtains IPv6 just fine.

Hello @mobilepunk

I have a similar modem working with an IPv6 prefix allocation from Comcast, but it wasn't working for a long time, and then at some point when I tried it again, it started working. Not sure why. But, I sort of suspect in your case connecting things other than your Google WiFi to the cable modem and getting a prefix allocation for them might cause Google WiFi to be unhappy about renewing an allocation it didn't originally request (lots of speculation here – I just know Google WiFi appears to be a little sensitive about IPv6). So, you might just turn off IPv6 on Google WiFi for a couple days to let all of the leases expire and then turn it back on again to see if it works. Even then, you might need to leave it enabled for awhile – maybe 24 hours – before deciding it is or isn't working.

Hey, mobilepunk.

Have you spoken with Arris or your ISP support about what's happening to see if they're aware of any issues that are specific to Google's WiFi products? If so, what sort of information did they provide? Any additional insight on this would help.

Thanks.

It's not an Arris problem because any other device vendor works just fine.

Hi, mobilepunk.

Sorry for the delay on this. Looking into it, I can't find another instance of the issue to reference. Has anything changed on your end? Is this still happening? If so, please let me know and I'll see what else we can do and who else we can rope in from our internal teams to help us out.

Thanks.

Hey, mobilepunk.

This is still being looked at internally. Last I heard they were working to reproduce the issue, so I'll continue to keep in touch with them and let you know of any new developments.

Thanks.

Hi, mobilepunk.

Have we had you send feedback in yet through the Home app? If you haven't done that, it would help as it goes directly to our internal teams. Below are the steps for doing that. Make sure to use the ability to comment to explain things. While I have passed it along to my teams, this might get more eyes on the issue.

Step 1. Turn on device reports

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Chromecast, or speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Select the device you want to share feedback about.
  4. At the top right corner of the screen, tap Settings   Recognition & sharing.
  5. Turn on Send [device model] device usage and crash reports to Google. (Example: Send Google Home device usage and crash reports to Google.)

Step 2. Share your feedback

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. At the top right, tap your account.
  3. Tap Feedback and then tap the type of device you'd like to submit feedback for.
  4. To display available emails, in the "From:" section, tap the arrow on the right. Select your email address.
  5. In the feedback summary, write a brief description of your issue.
  6. Be sure to check the box for Screenshot and System logs.
  7. To submit feedback, at the top right corner, tap Send .

I'll follow up again soon. Thanks.

Hi, mobilepunk.
Just as an update, we're still looking into this issue and as of yet we don't have a solution. I just wanted to touch base so you would know that you haven't been forgotten. In the meantime if anything else changes about your situation, please feel free to update us in the thread.
Thanks!

Looks like things have changed and I am able to get IPv6 and properly route out. Currently showing 10/10 on test-ipv6.com now, although earlier in the day some tests were failing.

Well, that's definitely good news. I'll keep this open for a while still in case any new issues around this arise for you. Thanks for the update and hopefully things stay stable for you.

Thanks.

Hi, everyone.
As we haven't had any activity here recently I'm going to go ahead and close the thread. If you have more to add, feel free to start a new discussion.
Thanks

I've done this a few times and I do receive the IPv6 allocation and the wifi properly does the LAN IPv6 segment with the proper IPv6 Gateway pointing to the wifi but the wifi itself is not routing IPv6 out - i.e. it does not have the gateway towards Comcast.

Yeah, that's the sort of thing I saw for awhile as well. It did eventually resolve itself, though. Try waiting a day. If that doesn't help, then disable it for 24 hours and then try again.

The problem with that is that I am being assigned an IPv6 on the devices and every time I try to open something that has an IPv6 I will need to wait for the request to time out!

Oof. That's painful. You might just want to disable IPv6 in the router entirely for 24 hours and then try to re-enable it.

Hey, mobilepunk.

I just wanted to check in to see if you were able to find a solution to this or to see if there's anything else I we can do here. Let me know if you're still working on this or if we found a fix.

Thanks!

Can you provide any potential solution ?
