Connecting 2.4 GHz devices to google mesh router

BurbankGuy
Community Member

I just installed the google mesh router and the network is great. But when I tried to connect LED lights in the house and outside, they specifically state that they operate and connect to only 2.4 GHz network. I tried creating a separate guest network but that didn’t help. The Petzi treat can for my dog won’t connect, my LED WiFi lights won’t connect, and my Atomi Smart LED chain lights won’t connect to the Google mesh. How can I fix this?

I have same problems, Here is a work around solution if you are using iPhone, it will require two iPhones.

Here is the list how to set-up Feit (or another brand-name) Smart LED Bulb(s) which will work with Wi-Fi 2.4 Mhz band only with certain Multi-Band Wi-Fi routers such as Google Wi-Fi device (router) having without separate Wi-Fi name (SSID) for each band.

  • Install Feit (or other brand-name) app on both iPhones along with Set-up login name and password
  • For #1 iPhone only:
  • Go to Settings
  • Go to About
  • Go to Name
  • Change the name to your current Wi-Fi device’s name (SSID)
  • Go to Settings
  • Turn OFF Wi-Fi which it will force iPhone to use Cellular only.
  • Turn ON Personal Hotspot
  • Turn OFF Bluetooth
  • Exit the Settings
  • For #2 iPhone only:
  • Go to Settings
  • Turn OFF Cellular
  • Turn ON Wi-Fi
  • Turn ON Bluetooth
  • Connect to #1 iPhone’s hotspot
  • Type in your current Wi-Fi device’s password (SSID’s password)
  • Exit the settings
  • Unplug all your primary Wi-Fi device from the power source.
  • Power OFF both iPhones and power ON both iPhones
  • Make sure #1 iPhone’s Wi-Fi is turned OFF, Personal Hotspot is turned ON and Bluetooth is turned off
  • Make sure #2 iPhone’s Cellular turned OFF, Wi-Fi is connected to #1 iPhone’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is turned ON.
  • For #2 iPhone only:
  • Go to Feit Electric (or another brand name’s) app
  • Set-up Smart LED bulb(s) using Bluetooth mode not EZ or API modes. Hint: Fast blinking means it is in Bluetooth mode and should be successfully added Smart LED Bulb vs Slow blinking means it is not in Bluetooth mode which likely not successfully added Smart LED Bulb.
  • After connected to the Hotspot, proceed to next step.
  • Plug in your primary Wi-Fi device to the power source.
  • You may want to change name of #1 iPhone back to original name rather than Network name (SSID).

Buy a cheap Wifi router or borrow someone's spare Wifi router or buy a new Wifi router from store and set up smart LED bulbs, upon done as all smart LED bulbs working, pack up the recently purchase new Wifi router and return to store for full refund saying router does not meet your needs LOL.

Hi, BurbankGuy.

I just wanted to follow up and see if you were able to get things working using RobinJ's method or to see if you needed to look into other options. Hopefully this worked out for you.

Thanks.

Both Google Wifi and Nest Wifi broadcast both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands by default; you cannot switch off a band. So your problem is unlikely to be the 2.4GHz limitation of your devices.

Given your answer, why is the device that I’m trying to connect not showing on the WiFi list to temporarily connect to it?

BurbankGuy, are you saying that the devices you are trying to connect are not found by the Home app? i.e when you tap the + symbol, Home asks you what kind of device you are trying to add, then replies "no new devices found"

Hello

I am trying to connect Wi Fi LED lights in my house, Petzi Pet dispensing cam, and Atomic Light LED chain lights in my backyard. All those state they can only work with 2.4 GHz Wi FI, and when I try to connect to the temporary Wi Fi during their set up, I cannot find their Wi Fi.

Hi folks,

@Davy123, thanks for the help!

@BurbankGuy, I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with connecting your devices to your Google WiFi. If you're not seeing the temporary SSID of the devices that you're trying to set up, I would suggest making sure that they're ready for setup. Also, try using a different device to check if the temporary SSID is being detected.

Thanks,

Edward

Tha is for the suggestion Robin. I don’t have a second phone so your process is not easy for me to follow.

I hope someone in this community will propose a process I could use to make the temporary WiFi of the device to be recognized in google mesh WiFi.

Hi Robin

I ordered a router like you suggested and will follow your suggestion. Thanks so much!

Hello and thanks for following up. I was able to connect a 2.4HZ router, and set up my WiFi devices.  Then when I plugged the Google Mesh all devices work fine. This was a brilliant solution. Thanks!

Another solution is to buy a cheap wifi router with 2.4 Mhz or multi-band.

Unplug Chrome Wifi device and plug in cheap Wifi router.

Set up the Wifi router using same Chrome Wifi's network name and password.

Set up any smart LED bulbs.

Upon done setting up smart LED bulbs, unplug cheap Wifi router and plug in Chrome Wifi device.

Everything is done.

Buy a cheap used Wifi router or borrow someone's spare Wifi router or buy a new Wifi router from store.

Set up Wifi router using same Google Wifi's  network and password.

Set up smart LED bulbs, upon done as all smart LED bulbs working.

If you borrowed a Wifi router, you can return borrowed router.

Or if you purchased a new Wifi router, you can pack up the router and return to store for full refund saying router does not meet your needs.

Or if you purchased an used Wifi router, you can either return it for full refund or keep it as future uses.
