Google Nest Internet usage very wrong!

I was trying to see how much data I was using on a daily or weekly basis.  When I follow directions to look at "Internet Usage" it show I have used over 300GB in the past 1 day.  When I look at my Xfninty account's usage, I am at about 120GB for the last 2 weeks and my average montly total is about 350GB.

This seems like it's been an issue with these devices for a while.  Does anyone have a fix for this?

Hiya!

The internet usage isn't going to be accurate entirely on your device with what its showing. Usually, your ISP who gives your internet will have a more accurate reading. To also identify possibly why its high have you:

  • Check to see what applications are using most data
  • Check what devices are using the most data
  • Is any apps updating a lot?
  • Are you gaming quite often?

Based on what you find is using the most data then you can work out ways to reduce the amount of data you use.

I hope this helps!

I'm having a similar problem. Data usage shows much higher in the last day or week than my Cox app is showing. I bought the nest Wi-Fi pro specifically because it was one of the only routers I could find that seems to have good data usage statistics. I need it to be able to track how much internet each of my kids was using, and see if there were any other devices in my house that were hogging data that needed to be fixed so I don't go over my data cap. This is literally the ONLY reason I switched to this router.

For example, it shows that my Xbox used 13 Gigs of data In the last day. My Xbox was off all day and I have auto updates off. It shows one son's iPad used 73 gigs of data, and the other son used 5 gigs. Both of those numbers are just way off. It says total usage in the last day is 91gig down and 6gig up. These numbers are way off.

Hi @DgMoose,

Thank you for posting in the community.

It looks like the Recommended Answer has worked for most folks encountering this behavior. Please try the steps outlined above and let us know if the issue persists.

I guess I'll make a new post because no the response that was accepted did not address the original posters problem or mine. The problem is that the router or the Google home app or whatever is not tracking the data properly. The Google app says I used a total of 96gigs yesterday. Cox says  I used 18gigs yesterday. I understand there might be some discrepancy, but this is way off

I understand your concerns and that it didn't solve your problem. But as mentioned before the Google home app is an estimated usage figure.  Usually your router is the most accurate in terms of data usage, but I highly recommend you at least work out what's using the most data on the network. From research it does seem both should be accurate but to be sure use your ISP data usage to work out the actual data usage on your home network. I can understand it's alarming that the app is showing as using more data. But anything from streaming, gaming, downloading and  VPNS tend to use a lot of data. But since the original post  maker hasn't responded it seems to have solved his issue. But if you want make a new thread and have someone pick this up then please feel free to do so.

Whilst there isn't a clear fix to the data usage you could try to clear the data usage on the app and monitor it from there. Often ensure the Google home app and any smart home devices are updated to the latest version.

Whilst I did my best to address the issue and I did take into account of the issues and responded in the best way, I do understand it's not resolved your issue.

If you need more support feel to comment on thread or create a new ome. But I hope we can solve your issue. Take a look at this old thread also: https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Nest-Wifi/Google-Home-app-Wifi-device-usage-stats-still-compl...

It may help find some further information to assist in the issue your experiencing.

@lusvin Are you able to keep an eye on the thread and any future one for @DgMoose?

I'll look around and see if I can find something further, but also if you can, every once in a while do also try restarting your router, and restarting every device on the network to refresh the connection. It may also be worth resetting the entire router and the Google WiFi (Gen 1) as another fix.

Again keep us posted either in a new thread or in this thread. And I apologise that the answer didn't solve your issue.

Note: I'm not customer support and a volunteer helper.
