Google Nest Wifi - force 2.4 Ghz on iPhone 12

I am attempting to add smart home devices that require 2.4 Ghz to operate.  However, my iPhone is only negotiating at 5.0  Ghz.

I have walked away from the house, disabled wifi, re-enabled.  The phone will initially connect at 2.4, but quickly ramps to 5.0 once I approach an outlet to enable the smart device.

Is there anyway to force the Nest Wifi to 2.4, or my device on 2.4?

Hey, everyone.

I just wanted to check in once more as we seem to be slowing down in the thread. If you're still seeing issues, please let me know and we'll keep the thread open. If everyone has found resolution, we'll go ahead and close it up.

Thanks.

I'm having the same issue on android. The home automation device gets the wifi information from my mobile device. Because I can't connect my mobile device via 2.4 to the Nest, I can't see the device I need to connect to. I just got Nest Wifi to replace my old network, but I've spent hours trying to get my smart home devices set up but doesn't look like it's possible. So, it's going back. What a terrible design. I can see the 2.4ghz signal in wifi analyzer but can't connect to it.

Hey, seanfj and seamusvibe.

Sorry about the setup struggles you're seeing. I'm sure it's frustrating to have those devices and struggle to get them on the network. Some devices that require 2.4GHz struggle with the dual-band nature that the Nest WiFi uses, but usually once you get the device set up, there aren't issues keeping it connected. There are some workarounds for devices that don't handle these situations well, so here are a few things you can try.

Try setting up the device at the far edges of your network range. 2.4GHz is a slower speed, but it has a higher range, so the outer edges of your network should be limited to 2.4GHz. You can take your phone and the device to the edges of your range and run through setup, and then move the smart device to where it will be used. This is a common way to work through the 2.4GHz/5GHz issue.

Another way to work this out is if you still have access to your old network gear and you can set it up with the same network ID and password as your Nest WiFi network. Once your 2.4GHz devices connect to that, you can remove the old network setup and the smart devices will connect to the Nest 2.4GHz band correctly as they've already been set up with the same network ID and password.

If neither of those steps are viable for you to try or if they don't work, let me know and we can look at other solutions.

Thanks.

I did this, I used the same SSID and password as my old router but my doorbell will connect to my mesh router, is there a setting to make it discover the doorbell on 2.4 ?

Hey, Bloatdtoad.

There's no way to force a device to connect to a specific band. The way the mesh works is both 5GHz and 2.4GHz run at the same time and the devices will connect to the band they are designed to connect to. Sometimes certain smart devices struggle to connect, regardless of the dual-band setup or not. We have seen some devices that are compatible by the specs, but simply are difficult to get working.

One workaround that users have shared is to create a temporary hotspot network using a cell phone and using your network's name and password. Once the smart device connects to that hotspot, turn off the hotspot and see if it will then connect automatically to your home network. Let me know if the hotpost option isn't available for you.

Thanks.
