Google Wifi (1st Gen) unable to complete setup

Nushio

My brother recently reset his network with several Google Wifi points, and 3 of them have been unable to come back online.
We've tried factory resetting them, setting them up as additional points on different networks, using Android and iOS to set them up, etc.

It always fails on the last point, where the device is supposed to change it's setupXXXX wifi network to your named one.

The setupXXX network even functions in the mesh! (it has internet access despite no cables being connected, but won't rename itself to the home wifi network)

Based on the reddit r/GoogleWifi subreddit, this has been going on for a couple of months now. Help!

Hi @Nushio,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest community. I'm sorry to hear your Google WiFi 1st gen is unable to complete setup, but there's no need to worry; I'm happy to help you right now.

I appreciate the troubleshooting steps you have done. To get a better understanding of the situation, please help me out by answering the following questions:

  • Are there any changes to your internet plan?
  • Did you get a new modem when you set up your WiFi device?
  • What's the light color on the Google WiFi main router and the Google WiFi points?
  • Did you get an error message during setup?
  • Is the Ethernet cable from the modem plugged into the teal port on the Google WiFi device?
  • How many Google WiFi points are set up under your account?

Any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Regards,

Gabriela

Hi Gabriella, thanks for the response!

  • No changes to the internet plan
  • No new modem
  • Breathing blue
  • Yes, a very dull "something went wrong" on Android, and a very lame "Request failed. Please try again later" on an iPhone.
  • Yes, the Ethernet cable is plugged.
  • I have 3 WiFi points setup and working. I got 3 more from my brother, but am unable to set up any of them.

I've done full factory resets on these 3 devices. I've tried downgrading the Google Home APK on Android to various versions recommended over at reddit r/GoogleWifi, no "luck".

The end result is always the same: the device does get internet, but is unable to change it's setupXXX Wifi name to our network's. It also won't show up under out google home account.

We've even tried setting these points as a new network, under a new google account, under a new google "home". The end result is still the same, the device (connected to the teal port) does get internet, and connecting via wifi to the setupXXX network does give you internet access, but it is unable to rename the network to our chosen one and is unable to complete the setup.

Hi @Nushio,

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate the time you took to respond to my questions and the information you provided me about your Google WiFi device. I'm happy to continue assisting you.

We need to reset your WiFi networks connected on your device, including the WiFi setup network. Since you have Android and iOS devices, you can try the steps below:

Android

  • Go to Settings.
  • Select Connections Wi-Fi.
  • Tap, then hold the name of the network until the pop-up menu appears.
  • Tap Forget Network.
  • Tap the name of the network, then enter the required credentials to reconnect.

iOS

  • Go to Settings.
  • Select Wi-Fi, the SSID of the setup network. Forget this network.
  • Tap the name of the network, then enter the required credentials to reconnect.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Gabriela

It is frustrating. One thing that worked for me was setting up each WiFi point one at a time instead of all at once. Keep phone connected to the setup network during the whole process—sometimes, it switches back to mobile data too soon, which can interrupt setup.
