Google Wifi point unable to be added to Nest Mesh Network

I've been having some issues that I've read others are running into with a Nest mesh networks internet connection coming to a crawl where direct ethernet to the modem's connection/speed is fine.  After a long time with Google Support I was eventually told to do a factory reset on my mixed Nest/Google wifi network.

After the reset, I was able to add back my Nest points and had solid speed (so far so good) but I'm unable to add the Google Wifi points back.  Most of the time the issue is when I get to the step where the home app asks to connect to the google nest points wifi. (might be an ios dialog pop up).  After I do this it fails connection with a message about the network not being connected to the internet with a Try Again.  So I tap that and it fails and then asks if I want to use cellular data.  It's as if the Home app is expecting the Google Wifi point to be hardwired to the internet which wouldn't be the case unless I was setting up as a router.

I have three of these Google wifi points and none of them are able to be connected.  Any ideas?

Hi, tomn68.

Sorry for the late reply here and for the issues you're having getting setup to complete. I have a few questions that might help out a bit.

  • Have you tried setting up using cellular data?
  • Are you using Android or iOS on your phone?
  • If you set the network up using the Google WiFi points before the Nest points, do they still fail?

If you can let me know a bit more what's happening, we can narrow down a fix here. Thanks.

What I had to do was set up one of my older Google WiFi points and connect via Ethernet direct to my hub. Then set it up.

Apparently when setting up a giggle WiFi point with a nest router, the nest Point wasn’t getting an internet connection. Not sure why the device needed a connection since it should get internet access via the nest router. (Or why it would want to connect via cellular if that wasn’t working). The cellular option wasn’t working but could be because I don’t have a solid cellular connection in my home.  Anyway my fix was to connect it via Ethernet cable. Then once setup I remove the cable and I’m good to go. I had to do that with three of the older Google WiFi units. Luckily then have ethernet ports unlike the nest points (that would be helpful for connecting a printer).  Took lots of trial an error but I got it done.

Thanks for the update, tomn68.

Sorry it was such a process, but I'm happy to hear that you got things set up and working. Also, thanks again for sharing the process as that will help other users sort out their own issues if something similar happens to them. As we have our answer here, I'll go ahead and close up the thread, but if you need anything else feel free to open up a new discussion.

Thanks.
