Mac internet speed drops near zero several times each day

Nest wifi works fine with our iphones but our macs experience effective disconnection several times each day. Wifi still appears connected, but there is no internet. Checking Google Home, it looks like it's near zero speed rather than complete disconnection.

This is a new installation. The connection to the macs was never fully reliable.

Are you using DHCP or static addresses?

If auto, set DNS to manual and use 8.8.8.8 , and 8.8.1.1

im running an MacBook Pro, an old 2007 MacBook, 2 iPad Pro’s, 4 phones, and 6 Apple TV’s, all were never quite right until I changed the DNS settings. Don’t ask me why, but worked for me

Hi, echidna44.

I just wanted to check in to see if you were able to try the suggestions Tuzza made and to see if it worked out for you. If you're still in need of some help, just let me know.

Thanks,

- Jeff

Hi Jeff,

No. The problem is the same. Resetting the network also made no difference. The iPad also frequently disconnects. Only the phone with which I set up the network does not seem to have issues. This is frankly an awful experience.

When you say “WiFi still appears connected but there is no internet. Checking Google home….”

Is this when you do an internet test through the app on the phone you set up with?

When you say its a “New Installation” is that you’ve just installed the nest system or internet provider?

have you disabled the WiFi side of your internet providers router?

On a mesh test through the google app, how good is your mesh connection?

Need a bit more info, as it sounds a bit strange.

Hi Jeff,

I now spoke to customer support, and have now taken my modem entirely out of the loop, using Nest for PPPoE. Hopefully, that may solve the problem.

Hey there, echidna44.

Did the new settings show any improvement for you? If you're still seeing issues, let me know.

Thanks,

- Jeff

It looks like the problem has been solved. Thanks! Btw. I also removed spaces from the network name. So it's either that or taking the modem out of the loop.

I'm happy to hear things are working better, echidna44.

I'll give our teams the heads up on what worked out for you and they can use it to further test things. Before I mark this as resolved, is there anything else you might need?

Thanks,

- Jeff

Thanks. I think this problem has definitely been solved. So now we are happy!

I do have a minor unrelated question. Is it possible to use the Nest units to as an intercom to talk to people sitting next to other Nest unit in the house? (specifically, we have two satellites, and it would be convenient if we could use them as an intercom between one and the other).

Thanks!

Guy

Thanks!

Hi, echidna44.

There's no intercom functionality with the WiFi points, but that is a really cool idea! I'm happy to hear the problem has been cleared up, that's always great news. I'll go ahead and mark this one as resolved.

Thanks,

- Jeff
