Hi,

i have the Gen1 Google Wifi, i recently purchased a Nest Wifi Router and Point.

is there a way to change the main Google Wifi Router to the new Nest Wifi Router?

Do i just add the Nest Wifi Router to the main Internet Modem and swap out the Google Wifi Gen1 Main Router?

Thanks for the support.

Hi, retsel86.

I did the exact same thing that you're asking about here on my own network. I had a Google WiFi network and added in a Nest router and point. The way I went about it that worked flawlessly for me was to factory reset the previous Google WiFi router and remove it from my home network. I then set the new Nest router up following the recommended steps. This will create a new network, but if you use the same network name and password, all your devices will reconnect without issue. Once there, add the original Google WiFi router back to the network as a point.

If you run into any issues with setup, just let me know.

Thanks,

- Jeff

Thanks Jeff,

I am afraid if i reset the gen1 router.. will it remove my configurations like IP and Advance settings like port management and ip reservations?

Hey, retsel86.

Unfortunately, yes, you would have to set up your advanced network settings once more. You could keep the current router in place and use the Nest devices as wireless points, but if you're looking to use the new Nest router as your primary router, you will have to set things up again once more. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

- Jeff

Hi, retsel86.

I'm just checking back in to see if you decided on what direction you wanted to take on this. I know the setup would be a little time consuming with the advanced networking settings. Let me know if you needed any more input on this.

Thanks,

- Jeff

Hi, MelMarc.

A pulsing orange light on your point means that it's not receiving an active Internet connection. Here's what all the light colors mean: https://bit.ly/3gvzkoz. You'll also find an article about troubleshooting those connection problems.

Is your Google router connected and receiving an active Internet connection?

Thanks,

- Jeff

Good to hear, vivlund. Hopefully others see the process go just as smoothly in their experience.

How is everyone else doing on the process on their end?

Thanks,

- Jeff

Hello Jeff,

I have the same setup as you did, except I have Google Wifi router and a Google Wifi Point, and I want to replace the Google Wifi router with a Nest Wifi router. Did you use the Google Home app to reset the Google Wifi router by using the "factory reset network" option, or did you do it manually by holding down the reset button on the router only? From what I am reading, I think I only want to reset the router and leave all the rest of the devices on the network alone. Thank you!

Jeff,

I'm going to replace my Google Wifi router with the Nest Wifi router. I have the 1st generation 3-pack.  I'm experiencing issues with my points pulsing orange.  Before I replace the Google router with the Nest router I need to factory reset the Google router?

I replaced my Google Wifi router with the Nest Wifi router. I used the Google Home app to "factory reset network", but I think made a mistake in naming my network-- I didn't match the existing name exactly.  I had to reset all of my devices and still have some that aren't back on my network.  So I'd get as much input into the best way to switch from a 1st Gen. Google Wifi router to the Nest Wifi router... I spent days after making the switch attempting to get my network back to 90% of what I had before I made the switch.

thanks for the heads up, I am trying to confirm that if I use the same SSID and password that the network should reconnect with Google Support. I have some older devices that don't support the latest security protocols, so I have to worry about that, too.

I was able to replace the Google WiFi router with the Nest WiFi router using the same SSID and password and the setup was flawless. I used the “reset to factory settings” option in the google home app, then disconnected the old router, connected the new router, and followed the instructions on the app.
