I am trying to setup a smart light switch that requires access to a 2.4 ghz internet connection. I use Google Nest wifi which connects automatically to 5 ghz.
I've read advice to try setting up the device far from your router, but this is impossible in my case because it is a light switch that is fixed into the wall.
Is there anyway to force my Pixel 5a to connect on the 2.4 ghz band temporarily?
If the smart light connects with the 2.4ghz band then it's the Pixel that you need to move further away to force it to use the 2.4ghz band.
You could also try switching your WiFi off, create a 2.4ghz hotspot from your Pixel phone with the same SSID and password as your WiFi network and configure the light bulb. Then switch hotspot off and WiFi back on again.
I just spent four hours figuring this out and it’s not too difficult.
If you have AT&T the website is http://192.168.1.254
Click “Home Network” then “Wi-Fi” then look on your router for your access code.
In your router settings click “advanced options” and you’ll see three types of internet connection; 2.4 G, guest, and 5G.
DO NOT change anything until you’ve read the side panel that explains what everything is.
Change the Network Name (SSID) for 2.4 to say xxx_2.4GHz (xxx being your wifi name) and then change your 5G SSID to xxx_5GHz (again, xxx is your regular wifi name.) also, temporarily expand the Bandwidth of the 2.4 from 20 to 40. Once you have done this you’ll need to reconnect your devices (phone, computer). After your lightbulbs are fully connected to the app they use, (feit in my case) you can switch your wifi settings back to default.
I hope my explanation proves useful so you do not have to spend four hours figuring it out.
Sadly google wifi options for the band are limited. The only thing u can do is move the router as far away as possible from the device you want connected.. after it's out of range of 5g, itll pump in 2.4ghz to the device and u might be able to connect.... Wish it had better options. Good Luck
I just wanted to jump in real fast to see if you saw the replies here and to see if you still needed some help on this or if you were able to get it sorted out. If you are still needing some help, just let us know and we'll be happy to continue helping.
Just one quick final check in here since activity has slowed down. We'll be locking the thread in the next 24 hours, but if you still need help, I would be happy to keep it open. If there's more we can do, just let me know.
