Nest WiFi Pro wired connection is about 10% of what it was on Nest WiFi

So, my WiFi Pro arrived today and I was really excited to get it setup. I set everything up using the Google Home app and downloaded the updates. I have a fiber gigabit connection from my provider and their most recent modem. My wired connections are pegged to about 90Mbps. My Nest WiFi (non Pro) was getting 900+Mbps wired.

My troubleshooting has been the following:

  • Restart the Nest WiFi Pro network
  • Restart the modem
  • Restart all switches
  • Reboot the hard wired computers

My Nest WiFi Pro is in DHCP WAN mode and connected directly to the 10Gbps ethernet port on my modem. I am using a mix of CAT 5 and CAT 6 cabling and my switches are all gigabit or higher.

Plugging the old Nest WiFi (non Pro) back in yields 900+Mbps on wired connections.

I think something is wrong

Thanks, ordered them, at the price I’ll just return these nest pros.

I have these and its rock solid with my 330Mbps Line.

Well done on flagging this as a recommended answer.  The Community Managers are constantly abusing this feature themselves to write some reply minimising or even dismissing issues and flagging it as a recommended answer for marketing damage control purposes.  I didn't know multiple replies could be recommended answers.  This opens up interesting possibilities.

Decide to tag Google every day for an update. Screenshot_20221102_143449_Twitter.jpg

I've done the same recently with other Nest product issues (e.g. their  Nest Cameras have introduced major issue with night vision since the most recent firmware update).  Better even to reply to their social media posts advertising new products.  Unsurprisingly, they respond pretty quick to that!

UPDATE as of this morning:
-Yesterday i noticed the white light was blinking for quite a long time
-Checked documentation which said it means its updating
-The blinking lasted a REALLY long time.... from 1pm to when i went to bed at 10pm
-This morning the blinking had stopped
-Did a speed test and the speeds have improved. Still not on par with my previous gen nest wifi, but now much better than what i was getting.

Did your firmware actually change? What's the number in the node settings?

mines still the same, no change

Hi here it is:

1.63.318999

thanks for that - i think thats the same one that comes out the box

Oh ok.

And actually - just testing again the speed is all over the place.

This really is a let down considering the high price tag

For wifi6e this is actually quite affordable. But it should work, no matter what price really

Hey all,

I just installed a brand-new Nest WiFi Pro router, to replace a Nest router. Installation seemed easy and took just a few minutes. I'm only using the router -- there are no additional points.

However, now that the new system is up and running, the performance is noticeably worse than the previous Nest.

I have fiber, 600mb down/up, with actual speeds slightly exceeding that via an ethernet connection. I'm using 20' of Cat6 ethernet cable from the modem to the router. The router sits atop a half-wall in the middle of the house, unobstructed--an ideal placement.

Using either Google's speed test or speedtest.net, here's what I'm typically getting on a 2-year-old Dell laptop that is about 45 feet and one room away:

Nest WiFi Pro: 121 mbps down, 110 mbps up

Nest WiFi: 245 mbps down, 135 mbps

On an iPhone SE (2nd Gen), it's this:

Nest WiFi Pro: 165 mbps down 82 mbps up

Nest WiFi: 238 mbps down, 151 mbps up

From six feet away from the router, unobstructed, the iPhone SE (2nd Gen) reports this:

Nest WiFi Pro: 328 mbps down 251 mbps up

Nest WiFi: 602 mbps down, 455 mbps up

Any ideas what's happening? I was hoping to see a decent performance boost with the Nest WiFi Pro, certainly not a decrease.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Most of us are having the same issue. Wiring the backhaul seems to cause my issue, makes it slower to be hardwired

Yeah, it's been frustrating lately. I went from a Nest mesh setup (router + 2 points) only to discover the router by itself was a faster solution due to the backhauling issue. Figured I'd abandon all that for a single new Nest Pro--supposedly with faster speeds and better coverage--but that's been a definite downgrade so far.

Same here as well.  I have a 1gb fiber connection.  I'm only getting 250-300mbps on all points.  (I disconnected the 2 points and ran a speed test just from the main point that is plugged directly into modem with cat6 cable.  Still only 250-300mbps.  My old nest wifi was getting 500-600mbps.  Google needs to fix this.  I can return mine in the next 45 days to Best Buy.  If there is no improvement within that time, I will be returning this and going to something else.  I only upgraded to wifi pro because, my nest wifi points kept disconnecting or losing signal which was disappointing as well.  Hopefully they have a fix soon!

Yep, exactly. I thought the Nest WiFi Pro would be an improvement, certainly not a downgrade. And as much as we all would probably like to blame our internet providers, that is absolutely NOT the case here. I can verify that I'm getting about 103% of my advertised speeds using Cat6 ethernet from the modem directly into various laptops.

At this point, I'm running the old Nest Wifi and the Nest Wifi Pro side by side, just with different SSIDs. The old Nest Wifi absolutely smokes the WiFi Pro -- sad, because the Nest WiFi performance isn't too great to begin with.

According to specifications:

Nest Wifi Pro has a 2x2 antenna for 5ghz, while Nest Wifi router has a 4x4.

That might be relevant here for 5ghz wireless speeds, especially if clients supports Wifi 5 / 802.11ac only.

I don't work for Google.

That seems logical, although three of the PC laptops specifically say they support 802.11ax. Still, I wonder if you're onto something there.

Just to verify, those three laptops (Two on Windows 10, one on Windows 11) all confirm that they're connected via 802.11ax. Signal strength is fine -- full bars. Up/down speed is easily 30%-50% LESS than when connected to the older Nest router via 802.11ac.

I am having the same issue as others noted here. My ISP provides 1 Gbps internet and my laptop when hooked up to it gets 1.1 Gbps download. I have 3 Nest wifi pro routers and only getting about 200 Mbps download and about 400 Mbps upload. I have a Cat 8 cable wired in and I did an IP passthrough with the help of Nest support ( to eliminate double NAT) . I have factory reset, restarted several times and I changed my DNS server to the 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 .... All still resulting in same slow speeds. I was getting 800-900+ Mbps on my old nest wifi system .... Huge downgrade

I just spent about 90 minutes in chat with Google Tech support with no resolution. We went through the same steps you did -- reset the router and set it up again, mostly. I tried the DNS change myself yesterday with absolutely no benefit. Very helpful tech person, but something is definitely not right with this product. I have no choice but to send it back.

I've been seeing this across all my installs, this will definitely require a firmware / software push from Google, as I doubt this is working as intended.

Same here. Much slower. They’ll be going back if not fixed soon.

Mine's already boxed up to go back. I've done so many tests, factory resets, side-by-side comparisons, etc. I've got about 6 hours into it at this point, where in no case did the Nest Wifi Pro router exceed the performance of the previous Nest Wifi router, with devices running in 802.11ax.

Two different (and seemingly capable) Google techs can't figure it out either. So it's not just me and my 11 years of working in tech, web dev and e-comm environments.

I should have read more reviews.

Unfortunately it seems the only 2 options you have are to be patient and wait for FW or give it another look once the bugs are ironed out in the future and the product is actually working as advertised. I'm sure it will get resolved, not making excuses for Google, it just is what it is at this point, a dropped ball.

Or send them back

Unfortunately it's a firmware issue from Google. Every poster here has the same issue with no resolve for a fix. There are bandaid methods listed but no fix. Pending Google.

I agree, it is a decent price for what it "should" be.  I'm going to give it a little while since I have an extended return date.  I would like to stick with Google/Nest if I can since I have been sucked into the whole Google ecosystem.  It just sucks for everyone in here that the "community specialists" gives us half answers and half truths.

Did someone say the thread has been changed to solved? This has actually made me furious. What a joke.

It's been 5 days now for me this issue, think it's time to pack it up and revert back to my old setup. I'll never buy another google product again

I don't see it changed to solved. Thread still open and people having issues. Still waiting on Google to provide a fix for this issue. Wired is fine for me. Also if I keep my devices close to the router they connect to 6ghz. But examining my network with apps shows if I'm more than a few feet away from my main router devices then prefer 2.4ggz or 5ghz. It shows 6ghz as weak and this is in a smallish 1250sq ft house with 3 of these nest wifi pro. Worse then the original nest wifi.

They had changed it to solved but looks like they've removed that now!

That's typical of Microsoft support online as well, as this support is all contracted out to third-world companies. They first don't understand the technical issue, due to language barriers, and then think it is resolved when one person reports no issues. I've been getting that type of run-around from another company on a different issue.

Right now checking both of my XPS 13 laptops that have WiFi 6e, they stay on the 6Ghz band as long as close to the main router. It was my understanding that the 6GHz would be available at all Nest Pro points? Is that not the case? Because once I move to the other room which is only 20 feet away and right next to another point near my couch, my laptops and my Samsung S21 Ultra phone prefer to connect to 2.4GHz or 5GHz slower bands. The Intel Killer app on my laptops show the 6GHz band having very poor strength 20 feet away from main router. Something is definitely wrong with this hardware or the firmware or the mesh solution overall.

My brother has an Amplifi Alien with only WiFi6 and has ONE of them in a much larger house, and gets full coverage and full speeds throughout the house.

This is the message I got back from Made By Google on Twitter by DM

"We're sorry if this is taking a long time ― our team is now aware of it and they're already working on a fix. We have no time frame to give, but we understand it's important to resolve this in a timely manner. Thanks for bearing with us."

a timely manner is the 30 day amazon window that i am bearing before returning this kit and looking elsewhere.

Not just British.

Here in US, with Verizon FIOS 1 gigabit connection.

My old setup with nest wifi router plugged into ONT and 2 Google wifi pucks in mesh, was getting 300mbps up and down in most areas of the house.

Tried replacing that setup with 3 nest wifi pro 6e points today on the same locations.

Restarted everything.

Result? Less than 100mbps down in main part of house, less than 50mbps in far corners. House is only 1700 sq ft.

Worse: less than 50mbps UP in main part of house, sometimes only 5mbps in far parts.

Requested a return and sent the 3 piece pro back today. Junk.

Given this is taking some time for Google to fix the issues(s), for those of us that bought our systems from the Google Store, it would be nice to see an exception made for the return policy to lengthen the amount of time we have to return the Nest Wifi Pro package.
The standard time return window is only 15 days from day of receipt, but given the issue, this should be extended to at least 30 days for all of us early adopters who are feeling the pain of a system that does not function properly.

Or maybe a significant discount for being beta testers and finding this bug. I don't even know if I'll repurchase these given everything I've already gone through.
