Nest Wifi Pro is wired but shows wireless

SpaceCow
Community Member

Hi,

My setup is as following:

Nest Wifi Pro 1 ---> Switch 1 ---> Switch 2 --Nest Wifi Pro 2

The first week the Pro 2 shows up as wired but now it shows up as wireless in the Home app. The connectivity led on the switch is green and blinking, nothing has changed in my setup or configuration.

How come? I've rebooted the devices multiple times, same with the switch.

What exact switches do you got? Brand, model. Some unmanaged and most managed switches can have conflicting features, like loop detection/prevention, like STP (spanning tree protocol). On a managed switch this feature should be disabled to work well with Nest Wifi.

Switch 1: Sitecom LN-121

Switch 2: Linksys LGS116P

Both switches has 802.3x flow control. Netgear says:

  • IEEE 802.3x flow control works by pausing a port if the port becomes oversubscribed (that is, the port receives more traffic than it can process) and dropping all traffic for small bursts of time until the port is no longer congested."

I think that can be a problem.

Edit: Never mind. The switches I regularely recommend, Netgear GS105/8/16 and TP-Link TL-SG105/8/16, has this too. Hmm.

Here is a previous thread on the same topic:

Sunmary of suggestions is to not mix wired and wireless backhaul, and to make sure ISP equipment is in bridge/bypass mode to avoid double NAT.

I've set the modem in bridge mode rebooted all the devices but still wireless.

When I temporarily connect them directly with a cable then it shows 'wired'.

Alright. I've escalated the thread, Google staff should make the next move.

You could try to remove the switches from the equation, plug an ethernet cable directly from the primary unit LAN port to a secondary unit WAN port, and see it it stays on "wired". Just to make sure it's not any of the switches causing this.

Hi SpaceCow,

That certainly hasn't been easy for you!

Before we proceed to the next steps, could you confirm if the troubleshooting steps olavrb provided work? This is to ensure that we know what the next steps are.

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Dan

When I wire it directly without switches it shows up as 'wired'.

The weirderst is that the first week it worked perfect. Is there a chance the cable causes this? I've replaced all the CAT5e to 6 (and give the 5 away so I can't check it for now...)

Interesting. Could be the cables, or could be the the switches. Netgear GS108 or TP-Link TL-SG108 are my go-to.

I feel so stupid... because of all the re-wiring i've accidently not plugged in the second switch (with the UTP). What happened is that the second Nest Pro became a wireless bridge between the two switches...

Because I had a connection I didn't think about that.

Sorry for the inconvenience.
