Nest Wifi Slow with Fiber?

KerooSeta

Hi, just got Fiber internet. I'm getting 1gb up and down on the speed test in the app; however, my phone sitting 5 feet from the router is only getting around 120-150mb up and down. I was consistently getting 200+ down when I was in plain cable internet 400mb plan. Is this just a flaw in the Nest? I have my H2D model. Should I upgrade to the Pro or should I try a factory reset?

Interesting. I set my phone to priority and got over 350, so they definitely helped. Still getting close to 1gb down on wired PC but randomly only 200 up. Turning off the priority thing solved that. And with priority turned off on my phone I'm still getting the 350+ speed. Weird.

Hey KerooSeta,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

Are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

  1. If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  2. Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  3. Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  4. Turn off IPv6.
  5. Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  6. Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  7. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Mel

Thanks for the suggestions. I was actually able to solve the issue by using the Prioritize function in the Google Home app. I made my phone a priority device temporarily then immediately stopped doing so and now my phone is getting around 400 mbps  up and down, which I'd consider to be a good wifi speed.

Hey KerooSeta,

Awesome — glad to hear that your issue is fixed. It looks like we can consider this one complete, so I will lock the thread shortly unless I can help out with anything else.

Best,
Mel

No, actually, it didn't fix it at all. I'm still getting terrible speeds over WiFi. I'm pretty sure that it's because the Nest is only a WiFi 5 router.

1. I'm using the Google Nest Wi-Fi system plugged into the Fiber modem provided by my ISP

2. Nope

3. None

4. Already off

5. Done

For the rest, I'll have to wait until everyone in my house is asleep to try but will do and will get back to you. Thanks
