Two routers in same network

RJScott

I have two nest routers and three points. I would like to use one of the routers as a point in.the same network: I want to have one functional router and four points in one network. How do I do it?

It should be as easy as adding a point to your existing Nest Wifi network.

I see that you labeled your post with iOS:

Make sure you have no VPN enabled/ connected; not any 3rd party product, nor the "Apple iCloud Private Relay" ( https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212614 ).

Make sure the Google Home app has been granted permission for "local network access" ( https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/7172427?hl=en ).

IPv6 on Nest Wifi has caused strange problems lately. One thing to try is to disable IPv6 ( https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/6361450?hl=en ), add new Nest Wifi unit, then leave IPv6 off or enable it again.

I don't work for Google.

it looks like the perfect solution!  I can’t try it until later today when I can shut down the old system.
Thanks, RJScott

Hey folks,

@olavrb, appreciate your helpful responses.
@RJScotta, chiming in to ensure everything is good here. Have you had the chance to try the suggestion above? If yes, how is it?

Best,
Mel

I was able to add a second nest router (as a point) to my system. It worked perfectly. The only problem I have now is to revise the DHCP settings in my nest router to get back to my original network. I have many static addresses that require a different address than what my new router has chosen. Now I am unable to revise the DHCP settings, so I presume I should just restart the installation and revise the Nest router DHCP settings right after I install the Nest router, and then add the four points to the system.

Hi RJScott,

Thanks for getting back to us. You can update the DHCP settings on your Google Home app. Here's how:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap Wi-Fi  and then Settings  and then Advanced Networking.
  3. Tap WAN.
  4. Choose DHCP.
  5. Tap Save.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Mel

Hi RJScott,

I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Have you had the chance to try the suggestion above? If yes, how is it?

Best,
Mel

I tried the suggestion of disconnecting the router from the WAN port and then modifying the WAN settings to the correct local IP address. No joy! I was not allowed to modify anything.

My next step is to start over after resetting my router to factory settings, restart setup for the router with the appropriate WAN, and then modify the WAN settings with no points attached. That should work.

Thanks

RJScott

Hey RJScott,

Awesome — glad to hear that and thanks for getting back to us. It looks like we can consider this one complete, so I will lock the thread shortly unless I can help out with anything else.

Regards,
Mel
