Weak Connection

brownel02
Community Member

I have a split level home of roughly 2700sf.  My nearest neighbor is about 1/2 mile away.  No new services/devices have been added to my house although 1 wall was removed to create a more open concept.  My services come into the basement (power, cable, internet...).

Case 1: For the past 3 years I have had my 1st Google Wifi set up in the basement attached to my router.  My 2nd point is in my dining room (1 room and 1 floor away), 3rd point is in the living room (2 rooms away but within eye sight, no walls).

I started having internet issues about 3 months ago (weak connection, dropped service, tv (in living room) buffering.  All speed tests show 450+Mbps and all connecting lines are CAT6.  I followed these instructions (they have been given multiple times on this forum):

*Do a full power cycle of the network - this will allow the entire network to re-establish connections. Here's how to do it properly.
  • Disconnect the power cable and Ethernet cable from the Google Nest Wifi router.
  • Disconnect the power cables from the other Wifi points.
  • Disconnect the power cable from the modem.
  • Allow the power to stay disconnected from all for 5 minutes.
  • Connect the power back to the modem only and wait for it to fully boot back up.
  • All lights should be lit up before moving to the next step.
  • After the modem is back online, connect the Ethernet cable to back to the Google Nest Wifi router's WAN port (globe symbol).
  • Connect the power cable back to Google Nest Wifi router and to other Wifi points.
  • Allow the all Wifi points to be fully back on.

These instructions made no difference to the signal quality, still showing as Weak on both of my wifi points.

Case 2: I moved my Main Google Wifi to the 1st floor running new CAT6 back to my router (30').  My 2nd wifi spot is now in the living room (eye sight to the main Google wifi modem) but the signal still shows as a Weak connection. No 3rd wifi puck is currently installed.

Any help on getting my service back to stable before I ditch these pucks?

Thanks

I’m having the same issue, weirdly with two pucks that are 15ft apart and have line of sight, my other 4 pucks are great and they are working fine between walls and floors.

I’ve swapped pucks around and found that any other puck in either of the two offending spaces also show as weak (even though it’s down a hall and have line of sight of each other).

Could it be some weird interference? Or is it that one puck has a weak connection and the second one is also showing as weak because of this?

Yes I am experiencing a similar issue. Have a router and 1 point in multi floor flat. Have had amazing service for past 18 months but in last 2 weeks the point has had poor mesh connection and also went offline randomly. Once I reset point is connected and provided good service again for 24 hrs but has subsequently returned to poor connection. No other changes to the house or Internet provider or points so no idea what triggered the change in performance.

Similar issue here, three points, wired backhaul to router for about two years. One point is now showing as weak and getting weaker over time.  Was there an software update that could have caused this?

Same issue. Suddenly weak connection with change and no cause.  Move 6 feet away.  Factory reset.  Reinstalled in google home.  Still weak connection.  Is it just broken?

And it was rather warm.  And the plug was warm.  Now it just says Offline again.  😞

Same here. Two additional routers not too far from each other, slowly degrading in strength. Sounds like a firmware issue. Would be great to have a fix and not have to switch to a different brand.

This might be a helpful data point for those folks trying to resolve this.  I have two APs on the same floor that rate "Great" and one AP that is 8 feet directly below a "Great" AP that gets "Weak".   There has to be a algorithm that biases the APs to seek the mother ship vs a nearby AP.  Tweaking that algorithm might be the solution for me.

I have the same exact problem. 🙂

Hi mp1121,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're also experiencing the same thing. Could you tell us more about what's happening? How many Wifi points do you have? Also, what troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

Thanks,

Edward

How about WHY would an AP next to the router be "weak" these are advertised as "easy setup"?

Sorry to say but your observation is a common one among Google Nest owners. I had similar issues which affected my entire network. Google’s response varied from “a known issue which was being investigated “, to “we have no idea”. I finally got totally fed up and replaced mine with a Linksys Nest System which I couldn’t be happier with. Not to mention the excellent tech support from Linksys when needed.  My advice would be to sell the Google Nest and go with something that works. I wouldn’t be surprised if Google pulls the plug on their solution.

Hey everyone,

I wanted to jump in here and let you all know that we have a new firmware release that is starting to roll out now. It has several improvements in store, and you should start seeing it hit your devices over the next 2-3 weeks. The update will download and install on its own, so you don't need to do anything to receive it. If you have any questions about that, please let me know.

Thanks,

Jeff

What’s the new version number? This way we can check and see when we get new version.

indeed... need to know the release number... that's basic... here as well from STRONG mesh wifi to crap... all my devices went to 30Mbps, while the switched items (cable RJ45) are like 1Gb as the internet connection.... don't know what those guys did with their sw release but for sure something happened recently. they messed up the wifi and mesh system.

so, what is the release number..

honnestly, i'll got for another solution if not able to provide a proper support.

Hi Glynne,

What sort of improvements have you seen? Is it a speed or a connection improvement? What issues are you still having?

Thanks,

Jeff

Same Problem. worked great for a little while now I'm constantly having to unplug and plug them back in to get them to connect almost daily now.

I had to order a temporary TP-Link WiFi router until this is fixed.  Nest WiFi was amazing when I first bought it and started using it April 2020.  But over the past two months or so, it's went steadily downhill.  Sometimes it's tolerable, sometimes it's unusable.

I really want to like/love it again, I hope it gets fixed.

I’m having the same issue. I got the router and three points setup about a year ago. Everything has worked great until recently.

I’m now getting a strong signal from the AP 15 feet from the router, but weak from the other two APs. Everything had been strong previously.  I have not moved or changed anything when the weak signal issue started.

I added a fourth AP today to try and extend coverage better just outside the house to accommodate new Google outdoor battery cameras.

It doesn’t matter what I reset, remove or move closer.  Three of the APs now always display a weak connection. I can move them in the same room with the router and still get a weak signal.

I guess I’ll take back the AP I just bought until this gets figured out with my existing APs and weak coverage.

Same issue.  Nest WiFi worked amazing for months not nothing I try will improve the connection.  Our speaker groups also started clicking at the same time the WiFi started having issues.

Just purchased a router and access point set too. Access point about 8m away from router with one wall between. The point is in the garage (office), sitting in the window, while the router is against the outside wall of the house. Currently have a weak connection and the internet speed on my PC is less than if I connect directly to the Sky modem, which sits next to the nest modem. Very disappointing. Think it'll be getting sent back!

Same problem here. 2 routers. Second one less than 25 ft away. A couple of drywall walls between them.

Great connection for months. Now weak. No changes to network.

My internet is almost unusable at this point. I have the three access point mesh setup and they all show a weak connection - Wondering what would be a good alternate brand, for what I read here, tech support is non-existent

I just picked up a TP-Link Archer AX21 as a workaround.  Man, it's like night and day.  It's likely going to be a permanent replacement.  As good as Google Nest Wifi when I first got it.  It can be a mesh product with compatible TP-Link products.

Hi - are you still able to use the AX21 with goole home? I mean is it compatible - "works with nest"?

Thanks

I've replaced the Google Nest Wifi with the AX21.  The Nest Wifi is sitting in my closet powered off waiting for a fix from Google.  If no fix comes, will have to see if I can sell it on eBay.

Replying to the tech support aspect.  This forum is really community support, user to user with the occasional tech involved.  If you submit a tech support request through the Google Home app, they are very good.  Chat or phone call.  But this has even them stumped too.

Same issue here. Smaller home, so 1 router, 1 access point. Has been great for 2 yrs. About 2 weeks ago, weak mesh. I did the reset. Didn’t fix it. I moved the access point. Nope. My roommate and I can’t watch videos at the same time. Might as well use my unlimited cell phone plan.

I might as well pile on. Set up the 3 pack nest mesh system in March 2020.  Added a Google wifi point several months ago so I could hardwire my work computer.  I have a 1400 sf 1 level home and mesh connectivity has always been great.   Now all of a s I have weak connections between points.  I unplugged and rebooted with no changes. I don't want to change brands but will need to if I can't fix this soon. If anyone finds a fix, please post it

One rotor and two end points here and I have the same issue. No matter how close I bring them it shows weak connection. I even tried purchasing another router and endpoint to add to the network thinking I could strengthen the mesh network. That actually was counter productive and made the network much more buggy. This has been a very frustrating experience

SteveRB

For reasons I can't explain, mine suddenly started working again about three hours after reporting the problem through the Google Home app.  Probably a coincidence but i now have a "great connection" on the second point and much more responsive Wi-Fi overall.

I wish I could let you guys know what happened

Chip32

Just add on that I have the same problems with a weak connection between the Wi-Fi.  My AT&T router gets 750mbps, the Nest Wi-Fi router gets about 350-400 mbps, and then my furthest Wi-Fi only provides about 50mpbs on a good day.  I have a 2,600 foot, 2-level house built in 2017 with the router and 3 additional Wi-Fi points, but all 3 of them are showing a weak mesh connection despite being no more than about 20-30 feet away.

I'm a big Google guy, but I'm looking for other options because this is ridiculous with fiber.

I am having the same issue. Google Nest Wifi with 3 points. Worked fine for about a year. Now all of a sudden all my points are weak. Makes no sense. Why have a mesh system from Google if the hardware all sucks.

Walker
Community Member

Same my end, six WiFi points worked fabulously for years, last few weeks the mesh is unavailable most of the time, the only points working are the main router unit.

Have done numerous system factory resets, it's very frustrating when you invest heavily in a backbone that is used to support both family and business activities

afreda2604

My system is super simple...all points are close and worked great all summer and early fall.

I have 3 points and 1 as the main and never had a problem before. Google must have pushed out an update or something that messed everything up because now I just get random mesh test results so I dont think the home app is even working any more.

Same issue today, Now sending daily logs and screenshots, not had a reply as yet

Walker

Daily log sent to Google, a change overnight, four of my six points are showing good or great, however two are still weak. One is in the middle of the house and mesh one is on the periphery.

So something has changed, I didn't do a factory rest yesterday so I hope a fix is on its way.

Walker

Today is the best it's been ....ever. A few factory resets for two points and a full power down and all qbck to green with good or great connection.

Hope your all getting a similar improvement.

Many thanks matt
