Wifi - Stand Alone? Few Questions about the platform

Hello,

I am tech savvy and gadget loving. (Tweaking , fine tuning , building different things, and squeezing the most of out any and all devices I have for stable and performance based usage) That being said I've never looked into Google wifi or nest ? Basically I am in a rural area and only have CenturyLink and what was Service electric cable , now bought by optimum as chocies for internet. My question is, is Google a stand alone system? Would they provide a router and modem to me and then I can add these different pucks etc as needed? Im assuming there is no hardwired lines from utility poles to house? How does it work? All my wife and I do is use Netflix, Hulu etc watch whatever shows we want and that's it, no regular cable no house phone. Just internet.  If someone could dumb down how this works for me I would appreciate it. Since optimum bought service electric which we were able to just buy internet from , optimum is starting with these absurd bundle packages that are a complete waste of money and would not be used.  Thank you in advance.

Hello @D36

The Google WiFi system is just a router (and optional mesh extenders) that provides local WiFi connectivity just within your home. It requires an existing internet service of some kind to connect to the rest of the world. It will connect to just about any modem that provides an Ethernet port. It is not an alternative internet service. I hope this helps answer your questions.

Thank you. And unfortunately this was my question. There is a company in our area that is building a wireless service we use it at work. We get our internet from them purely wifelessly which then connects to our unifi wireless network and give wifi coverage across our entire plant ( concrete producer) I can get wifi in mu office then walk 400 yards to another part of the plant and have super fast connection.  I used the app WIFI AR to see just how far I could keep useable speeds and its well past our property line.    I'm wondering if there is any other type service that you know of that offers for lack of a better term a jet pack  with just a monthly fee and can be used as a constant stable connection?

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with all of the internet service provider options that may be available, wireless or otherwise. It sounds like you have a commercial WiFi system from Ubiquiti that is providing coverage throughout your company's facilities, and that system is connected to the internet via the local (wireless) internet service provider. A Google WiFi system may be able to provide WiFi access throughout a single home (and maybe the yard), but will still require an internet service provider of some kind to connect to the internet. These are independent problems with independent solutions.
