Wired / Wireless Upload speeds capped at 100mbps? ATT Fiber

Community Member

I have gigabit internet through att fiber and just bought a google nest wifi 2 pack a week ago. Setup was a breeze and everything looked good until I noticed my upload speeds were capped at 100mbps on every device behind the nest. Google advised a replacement so I did just that. Everything looked perfect for a day - i was getting expected speeds for wired at 800mbps and wireless was around 300 - 400mbps up and down. I check today - same issue as before where all devices are getting great download speeds but capped at 100mbps upload. I found out, however, that if I select a device as priority in google home, that device now works as I expect. Its like the nest is throttling every device in my network for some reason unless i say otherwise. The priority settings fixes both wired and wireless settings. Im pretty sure the problem must be on the Google side since that change fixes the issue. If I could prioritize all devices 24 hours a day, I would be happy with that workaround 🙂

For reference the setup is

ATT ONT --- ATT Router (bypass mode) --- Google Wifi

Wifi has been disabled on the ATT router and that router is now simply forwarding all traffic to the google nest. I put in a ticket with google who requested I put the router in bypass mode and force DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, These changes made no difference. They then requested logs and are reviewing the files I sent them via the home app and will get back to me. During testing, they told me not to prioritize a device but thats the only way things work as they should. Im seriously considering returning the nest wifi but wanted to hear if anyone else had issues like this. Again, two different nest routers having the exact same issue.

I put in a ticket with ATT who said there should be nothing on their end throttling the traffic. If I plug my computer into the same att router port as the google wifi (move the nest off the port, then replace with my computer), the computer links up at a gig and the speeds look fine.

Nope.  Your only solution is switching to Amazon Eero, TP-Link Deco, or Asus Zen.
Google WiFi does not work at all with high-speed internet.  You can verify
this by doing speedtest.net on a laptop thats plugged in by wire
directly to your router (with the Google WiFi turned off) -- then compared
to connecting the laptop by wire directly to the main Google Wifi
AFTER IT'S BEEN RESET AND ON FOR AT LEAST A WEEK.  Many
people haven't realized the problem is temporarily solved when you reset
the devices, but in all cases, the issue returns after a few days.  We've all
been aware of this issue since July 2021.  We have received very little
feedback, only one firmware update, that did not solve the problem, and
Google continues to sell the units with no mention that they don't work
on most internet ISP services above 500M.

This thread is getting confusing because there's at least 3 unique issues being bundled into this same topic.

1. The correct issue: WIRED INTERNET COMING INTO A GOOLE/NEST WIFI ROUTER AT 1G IS SLOWED TO A WIRED SPEED OF 100MB WHEN COMING OUT OF THE OTHER END OF THE GOOLE/NEST WIFI ROUTER.  THIS HAPPENS AFTER ONE WEEK EVEN IF THE GOOGLE/NET WIFI ROUTER IS FACTORY RESET

2. Another issue in this thread: WIFI SPEEDS ARE UNPREDICTABLE AND SLOWER THAN EXPECTED

3. Another issue in this thread: GOOGLE/NEST WIFI UNITS REBOOT UNPREDICTABLY AND ARE UNRELIABLE BECAUSE THEY ARE DISCONNECTING AT RANDOM TIMES

It should be clear that this topic is about issue 1, not issues 2 and 3, and the moderator should be moving those posts to the appropriate topic.  This post now has three different issues all mixed up in it so it's hard to know which solution is for what problem, and it gives Google even more excuse to ignore us.

I've always assumed this thread was about the fact that wireless speeds were being capped at 100 mb/s. My wired speeds through the Nest router are just fine. 1 gb/s in and about 800 mb/s out, Give or take.

If I'm not mistake , in your scenario, your main point is plugged directly into your modem, giving it the ability to transfer data at the advertised speeds. Our situation would be, if you had two main points with the second being an “access point” and using that access point to hardwire. In this given circumstance, you would be super limited to obtain fast speeds.

Your test would be purchasing a second primary point Nest Wi-Fi and using that as an access point and testing speeds through a second computer or laptop, hardwired. That would be the real test.

Hi, I too am running into this issue. I pay for a 300gb connection, and the Google Home app is showing that the speed of my network is always right around 300gb. However, any of the machines I plug directly into my wifi points are getting 1/10th of that, coming in around 30gb. When looking at the speed test on the Google Home app, it's saying that the devices are getting 300gb, but that's simply not true. Seeing that this has been an ongoing issue for folks for months makes me think I'd be best off returning the mesh devices and going with a different service.

To be perfectly honest, if you're still able to get your money back go ahead ASAP and get some other system. Some folks here recommend Eero, TP Link, etc. No decent answer from Google in all this time means they will simply not address this issue. Good luck!

I just started having this issue about 9 days ago. For two years I got 900+ and now it's throttle to 100. I had a tech come out from my ISP and confirm that the modem and the feed into the house is good to go. Reset everything, swapped everything around, nothing. Speed test on the app, via hardwired connection, and wifi are all slow. Has anyone found a fix? I submitted a feedback ticket, but with how often I have been resetting this thing lately I'm about to toss it and buy a better system.

The only thing I can tell you is that this issue was first raised almost a year ago and the only thing that Google has said (through @Jeff) is that they are aware, allegedly working and released a firmware update which did absolutely nothing. Best bet is to take the loss and move to another decent system.

Yup. Spent the time since I posted my reply researching. I think I'm gonna go with the TP-Link X90. I've been having other issues with this system and the wifi speeds and range were never great to begin with.

I've also have this problem since the start.

I just picked up a TP-LINK XE75. Insanely fast and the range is so much better. I was getting 30 Mbps in my living room the whole time I had the Nest and now I'm getting 300+. Closer to the router I'm getting 450+.

I have large house with 2 of the new Google Wifi and 3 of the old google nest devices.

Not only are my speeds bad, I have 70x (and growing) unknown devices on my network.

I have called Google a dozen of times over the last few years and they are CLUELESS.

They can't fix the bugs and I'm guessing it is a HARDWARE problem / not software problem.

The should be RECALLED and we should be able to return them for FULL refund.

Couldn't agree more. My house is about 3500 Sq ft and I'm getting 250+ even outside with the new system. Haven't tested range yet.

I went from 5 (3 Nest 2 Google) to 2 TP-Link v90 router/points and stability and speeds have been great (3400 sq ft - two levels).  It is nice to download game updates on the Xbox and PS4 and not take forever.  It is a bit funny, the Nest cameras we have are more stable as well. They were always going offline at least 2x a week.

Why updates on weird speed issues?

Hey, MagicalAIDSFrog.

I'm not privy to the exact details of testing or the progress on the testing. Generally those efforts will follow the data they're receiving and they'll work to recreate issues in an isolated environment so they can identify causal factors. Once they've created a fix, I'm given the information on that fix being rolled out. What updates I do receive along the way, I share with the community.

Thanks.

Hey, everyone.

I understand the continued frustration here. It's been a problem with a long fix time, but I still don't have any updated info at this time to share. I'll definitely circle back with more information when I have it, but at this point things are still being looked at. I was hopeful that the latest firmware update would clear things up, and it did for many, but we're obviously seeing plenty of others affected still. I'll return when I have more to share.

Thanks,

- Jeff

I haven't seen a single post on this thread with anybody claiming that it's fixed their issue.

Hi zogo0611,

I this time, we don't know what's causing the issue, and it's difficult to narrow down due to it being so sporadic in nature. We do know there's some sort of issue to be resolved as it's affecting multiple users, but it's not affecting all users. Like you all, I'm hoping we find out more and can get this worked out for everyone.

Thanks,

Jeff

Literally ordered an Eero kit from Amazon and initiated trade-in on my Google units this morning.

Goodbye Google wifi.

Hi Jeff, your lack of resolve speaks volumes. As shown above plenty of community members are ditching Google for Amazon. I personally steered a friend in that direction due to this issue. You should pull this product from the market. Google have promised something they cannot deliver. Be careful, this thread is more than enough evidence for a class action lawsuit.

Hey everyone,

I wanted to jump in and let you know that we have a new firmware update that's starting to roll out to the Nest and Google WiFi devices. There are a variety of fixes and improvements in this release, so I'm hoping you all see some noticeable progress. You don't need to do anything to get the update, it will download and install automatically when it's pushed to your devices. If you have questions about that process, please let me know.

Thanks,

Jeff

How can I verify I received the update?

Jeff,

can you please share some target metrics so we can confirm improved performance before we start troubleshooting and/or continue the bad press against Nest Wifi?

Hi all,

I wanted to answer a few questions that came in over the weekend. To update to the newest firmware, you don't need to do anything. Your devices will automatically download and install the upgrade. I don't have the newest firmware version release number yet, so I can't provide that until I receive it. I will update the thread with that info as soon as I have it. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff, it's been a week since you dangled this particular carrot, but I wanted to follow up. From what I can tell, the current firmware is 14150.43.81 on the main and 1.54.294928 on the APs. this appears to be the firmware from the March update. I know that you said it'll probably be a gradual rollout, but no one on here has reported getting it yet.  Are you still without a firmware version number and/or a way for us to manually pull the download? We've been waiting, some of us for many months, to get a fix on this, just so we can get what we thought we were paying for.  I would say that most of us chose Google/Nest as our wifi solution because of assumed compatibility with our existing hardware, or trust in the Google name, but lack of correction and/or follow-through has made several people question that loyalty.  We need either a permanent fix or something officially stating that it can't be fixed, this is far too long to be sitting and waiting for a solution. Also, since we're still waiting, maybe it's a good idea to give us an option (in this or future updates) to give us a path to manually update the firmware, so we're not at the mercy of an "automatic download" that may or may not ever come.  That way, if we attempt to get the firmware and fail, we know to take the extra steps to get it.

We're all waiting on your replies with baited breath...

Hey all,

I wanted to share my poor performance experiences as well.
The main Google Wifi router runs it's speed test @ my ISP's rated speeds, 300MBs up & down.
However, anything connected past that will max out @ 100 up & down.

Everything ran at 300 when I was first hooked up, and resetting all points, including the main, doesn't change anything.

This issue was reported over nine months ago and since then the topic has grown exponentially. An update was implemented by Google towards the end of March, after six months, but alas the masses have the same headache. @Jeff (some refer to as a Google bot) has been quiet, one post in ten weeks since the update.

Our home is dominated by Nest products (Thermostat, Smoke alarms, Cameras, Wifi) and all I can say is since Google’s involvement in the Nest brand it has hit the skids. I have since had issues with Google's new Nest battery camera too. I hope there is a fix for this Mesh issue to restore my faith in the previous brand that was Nest.  Evidently, I doubt Google will be able to deliver.

Boy, I wish I had seen this before buying this crap. I have the Spectrum 1gig, and I can't get anything over 100 if I'm right beside it, and Google tech support did nothing.

I read somewhere if I put their WiFi device back in and then piggyback the Google System from there, it would work. Does anyone know if that's true?

I had this one day, and it's a paperweight and going back!

Thanks,

JJ Smith

original google 3 puck wifi, 1G ISP, getting ~840 download from the app, 200-350 on the systems, next to the puck, strong mesh.. ugh...

Was there any resolution to this issue. I am experiencing the same issue for last 2 months where google mesh router crawls to 1mbps everyday while connecting to my internet service provider (xfinity) directly gets me over 500mbps. If I restart the google wifi mesh network, it will be fine for a few hours and then degrades back to dead slow. Please help!!

no resolution. so annoying.

They already got our money. It’s not an issue that’s well enough for more people to know about.  What motivation do they have to actually do anything to fix it? Best to ditch this POS system and get one that actually works!

I'm sorry if this has already been answered, but this is a LOOOOOONG thread.  I was having this problem, too until I looked at the ethernet cable I was using between the modem and the Nest wifi.  MAKE SURE YOU'RE USING CAT 6 CABLE - CAT 5e is not good enough, it has to be CAT 6. I went from 91 mbps to 700 mbps over my google mesh, just by changing out the cable.

Did you ever receive a good solution?  We have exactly the same issue and have had AT&T out several times but they verified the problem isn’t on their end.

Hi Jenny.. yes i did after months of complaining with support one day all my devices ( 6 hubs/ points) got remotely upgraded without any prior authorization and it work for 7 months perfectly. But by coincidence just yesterday things got back to the showing the slow lines. No clue what happened. Best
