YouTube and Play issues on Google Wi-Fi

I have Google Wi-Fi gen 1. YouTube buffers a long time before playing. YouTube TV buffers a long time, then will play a few seconds, then buffer again. Google Play will not download any app updates. Similar issues occur on Chromebook, Pixel 3, and Moto phones, and on a Kindle fire tablet with Google Play installed. The issue occurs when these devices are connected to my Google Wi-Fi.

I have cleared the cache and app data for each of these apps. I have restarted the Wi-Fi network, including the ISPs cable modem. I have changed from Google DNS to openDNS.

Nothing has worked.

All apps work fine on cell data, including updating apps on Google Play. However, on Google Wi-Fi, they do not work.

Other apps on my devices work and have connectivity, including streaming apps, such as peacock. It seems only the Google apps have issues.

I did a speed test and a mesh test on Google Wi-Fi. 80 mbpd down, 10 up. 3 point mesh was solid.

I have seen a couple people post about the same issue elsewhere a year ago, but the resolution for that person was to buy a new router altogether, and the issue was solved. Another poster mentioned that using a VPN also worked. I have not tried a VPN.

Any suggestions? I really don't think buying a new Wi-Fi system makes sense!

Hey, Rossmarp.

Sorry for the speed issues you've been seeing on your network. That sounds like a frustrating experience. Let's take a look at this and see how we can work it out and resolve the issue.

Thanks for letting me know everything you've tried up until now. That really helps me figure things out more quickly. I did want to ask, however, if you could check to see if you have any preferred activities set. Here's how you manage that.

Turn on or off preferred activities

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Wi-Fi  and then Settings  and then Preferred activities.
  3. Check each activity type you would like your network to prioritize.

Preferred activities remain prioritized for your network until you turn them off.

With these preferred activities, you can prioritize certain types of traffic. Can you check to see if you have any selected? If so, try turning all preferred activities off to see if it has any impact on your speeds. If nothing improves, come back and let me know and we'll look at other steps.

Thanks.

I tried an old Wi-Fi router and had the same issue with all my devices at home. Long story short it turns out that my ISP was having a conflict with traffic through Google. It took several days but ultimately the problem worked itself out. So it turns out not to be a Google Wi-Fi issue at all. Appreciate the reply.
