I bought a second ASUS OnHub router beginning last year running a Mesh. By the end of this year two working devices become bricks because they can longer be managed. And that is just me.
Google, please reconsider your actions and prevent the trashing of tons of devices in your global markets!
And if you don't care about your environmental impact, you may ask which of your OnHub customers is willing to invest into your next hardware/software ecosystem...

It is interesting that the email I keep getting from Google regarding my two On-Hub Mesh system says, "A lot has changed since OnHub routers were introduced six years ago – most notably the shift to mesh networking systems." I have been using these for almost the 6 years of their existance and now Google wants to say that they are ending support for them because Mesh systems are better. What? Really? At least come up with a better excuse.
Also, if I am going to invest in a new wifi setup, it will be a Tri-Band Wifi 6, not the outdated Nest Wifi hockey pucks.
It definitely suck to have to replace a MESH system that is working just fine with no major issues.
What's really up, Google?

I find this Reddit post is interesting:
Might be Asus and TP-Link that don't want to continue colaborating on supporting old hardware anymore?

Hi, Schokoriegel.
I just wanted to jump in real fast to see if you saw olavrb's reply and to see if you still needed some help on this or if you were able to get it sorted out. If you are still needing some help, just let us know and we'll be happy to continue helping.
Thanks.

I just got to read it. olavrb got further with this issue. He talked directly to the Google Support at 1(844)442-3693. That was 6 months ago. I got the email "Your OnHub Wi-Fi router will not be supported next year" this month again. So apparently Google is not taking this issues seriously. If this goes as planned millions of OnHub device get bricked by the end of the year and will go to the landfill. Even brand new once (you can still buy TP-Link and ASUS OnHub device on Amazon today without a warning )!!
To be fair, I understand that if Google, ASUS, TP-Link, etc. are no longer "friends" and the OnHub ecosystem is outdated that a decision was made to stop further functional development. OK. But to intentionally break the management component of our purchased devices is a whole new level. Basically a big we-don't-care-slap into consumers faces.

I understand the frustration, Schokoriegel. I don't have all the details on the reasoning for how the end of life phase is being handled, but I can definitely see how it would frustrate OnHub customers. I would hope that retailers would begin to update their product listings to reflect the upcoming retirement of the product support as well.
Thanks,
- Jeff

So that’s the final answer? Jeff from Google declares the subject boring?

Hey, Schokoriegel. I apologize if this thread is being closed sooner than you would have liked. As Community Specialists, we have to do a bit of housekeeping to keep the conversations in our community fresh and relevant. This includes locking threads after a period of inactivity or where we find resolution for the question originall posed.
I would suggest you to search the Community to see if a discussion is open and ongoing about your topic. Topics with higher levels of activity will be kept open longer. Our official material on the OnHub end of life is found here: https://bit.ly/3eb9pBv. As far as how retailers or other companies involved are going to handle the transition, you would have to refer to their documentation.
Thanks,
- Jeff
