Advertisements playing, despite being Youtube Premium user.

Uriah
Community Member

Hello, for the past few weeks, Advertisements have begun playing on my Google Home Max, despite being a Youtube Premium user. I'll ask Google to play music on the device or group of living room devices, then after one song it will start playing an Advertisement...

I've confirmed my Google Home app is still set to use YouTube Music service to play from.
I've confirmed my subscription is very much still active, I've been sub'd for years to Google Music which gave me YT Red, which now turned into the YT Premium which Youtube Music uses.

yt
Can you tell me why I'm getting ads on Youtube Music through my nest device now? It's this how the paid service works or is something misconfigured?

Hey folks,

My apologies for the lack of updates on this. Quite a few of you have been having troubles getting advertisements on Premium YouTube Music accounts when playing music on Google Home/Nest devices. Thank you to everyone who updated this thread with details on what you're experiencing.

To help the team further to look into this, if you could send feedback from your Google Home/Nest device using the keywords, "GHT3 Getting Ads when playing YouTube music on <ei. Nest Hub Max>" that would be great. Within your feedback report, feel free to detail what's been happening, your location and the firmware version of your device. For instructions on how to send feedback, check this out.

I know some of you already provided the information above within the forum post and this will be shared with the team, but having this information included in the fresh feedback sent from your device is very important.

I'll hop back on this thread once I have some more details to share.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hey folks,

No new updates to share for now but rest assured that the team is looking into this issue at hand. For those users who haven't send feedback, please do so by follow the steps below:

1. Turn on device usage data and crash reports:

  1. Open the Google Home app
  2. Select the speaker/display device card
  3. At the top-right, select Settings and then Recognition and sharing.
  4. Turn on Send [device model] device usage and crash reports to Google. (Example: Send Google Home device usage and crash reports to Google.)

Note: For iOS devices, turn on Send device usage and crash reports.

2. Reproduce the issue (play YouTube music) then after the issue occurred, immediately send feedback from the Nest Hub Max device by saying "OK Google, send feedback" then say the feedback keyword "GHT3 Getting Ads when playing YouTube music on <ei. Nest Hub Max>"

Let me know once they're done.

Cheers,

Muddi

Have had the same problem...

I decided to downgrade from YT premium to YT music premium. And ads started to pop out betwenn songs and even before songs! I've got a couple of Nest Mini 2nd gen.

No google-found solutions helped - casting from YTM app, changing music provider, resetting speakers, deleting home... Nothing.

Then I remembered one thing - when I had changed my subscription, I was under my account, but - not the primary YT channel (I have several). So, I have cancelled the subscription under this secondary channel, re-subscribed at the primary - and that helped! No charge from Google, because the subscription was still paid for till the end of the month.

Hope this helps somebody!

Yes, this is very annoying. Premium with ads!

Same issue here, but on google nest mini playing on Chromecast. The account is configured and has YouTube Premium and I got one short ad (5 seconds) between each song.

Same issue. Still playing ads despite being full family premium member...

I'm not sure if it's speaker specifically or broadcast but there are times when there are digital voids or no sound at all...maybe 1/2 sec or second... I have great bandwidth, and good coverage so it's not a reception issue.... Some good news is that my ads have stopped.

Hey kiwizz,

I appreciate it. By the way, what country are you located in?

@boonzer: Have you tried moving your devices within 150-20 ft. away from the router? Also, have you tried doing a sequential reboot that includes your router to refresh the connection?

The device is within 100' of a 1st generation wifi mesh. I'm most happy that the ads have stopped... The audio voids are just an annoyance. I'm from Nova Scotia , Canada. Thanks for your help

Hey boonzer,

I understand. If you experience the issue a lot of times, I suggest that you try to connect it to a different network like mobile hotspot to further isolate the issue. You can also check the recordings on "My Activity" from the Google Home app to check if your device was able to hear your command.

Same issue here. They are blaming the device lol. Usual corporate attitude of not taking responsibility

Hey Damgif,

Could you tell us what country you are located in? What Google Home/Nest device do you have? Also, what are the troubleshooting steps that you've tried so far?

Cheers,

I have a (what was Google play music account) youtube music account for years now.

-1 home max, 1 hub, 4 google homes, 1 max speaker in the garage, a 2TB google one account, 4 nest cameras, 4 nest thermostats, and a personal account... just recently ads have started to play, and the speakers are acting oddly...broken music, unable to play an album, broken sound machine at night... loud ads...NO, NO, NO! I have integrated Google into my life, and I pay for the convience of not being bombarded by ads....something has happened at Google, or Nest, or Youtube music that is causing a systemic problem. This is a serious issue, and new to my part of the world (Canada). Get this solved, it is a huge pain in thr @Ss

Uk. Google nest mini. I’ve tried all the steps recommended.

System firmware version 291998

Cast firmware: 1.56.291998

Sadly the ads have happened again....while listening to CBC radio streamed through the speaker group. CBC is a national government broadcaster they don't have ads. I'm located in Nova Scotia, as I've mentioned a few time previously in this thread.

I don't have firmware info....there are 7 devices in the house...I'm sure that google knows the firmware info, bandwidth, house layout, date of birth and favorite #.... If the price is going up, I won't be staying

I started hearing ads on my Google Home speaker too, despite having an active subscription. Nobody at Google seems to acknowledge this issue and pushes it back and forth to other departments. If this continues that way, they'll loose my subscription. Others should follow too.

Question for others with the same issue - do you use any network level ad-blocking? I.e AdGuard Home? Seems counterintuitive but I'm wondering if blocking ads somehow means the Nest devices don't know they shouldn't play any?

Nope, normal provider DNS, nothing special. I turned Voice Match off and the advertisements have apparently stopped for whatever reason.

Interesting you should mention voice match. I have voice match turned off and I don't have advertisements either.

So it's every second song now and I keep sending feedback and nothing's getting fixed. Figure it out or this thing gets tossed and Alexa gets set up. Absolute joke.

Same for me for Lenovo Smart Watch V2 and LG XBOOM ThinQ WK7. Same YT Premium account.

Only workaround it wont play ads is if I first play music from speakers (with assistant or by clicking) and then connecting YT music app to it.

YT music app is on iOS, that may be the problem?

Ads have been running for close to a year now.  Need this to end!

I think at this point you have to live with it or cancel. It's either intentional or they just don't have the competence to fix.

Was this ever resolved for anyone? Mine started doing this a few weeks ago. I checked my sign in stuff and it seemed to resolve until about a week ago and I checked everything. I have YouTube premium, family account. Getting ads for YouTube premium and occasionally told I can't play things without YouTube premium. I'm paying too much money for ad free music to be getting ads in my music for the service I'm paying for.

It spontaneously fixed itself for me after a couple of months.  No change on my side when it started, and no change on my side when it ended.

This continues to happen. I just sent more feedback as requested.

Same here. Checked settings and still get ads to update to premium. I already have it. I don't get other ads just YouTube premium ads.

ChrissyB173

Just to make sure this continues to receive updates as it's still happening for me too. Very frustrating as I'm paying to not receive ads. My wife uses Spotify and its a lot more reliable.

I am now experiencing adverts AGAIN despite having an active YouTube Premium subscription. I've been back and forth with support, who have blamed me several times, yet I've followed their troubleshooting steps with no success.

Google Home Speaker, asking for a song from YouTube Music, get a pre-roll ad displayed.

battiso

This seems to be going nowhere.  If google wont fix the problem, I suggest everyone call Youtube and threaten to cancel the premium service unless THEY put pressure on google to fix the issue.  A few customers lost wont bother them much but if a few thousand threaten, things might get done.  my 2 cents 🙂

Hello battiso,

Thanks for posting.

Apologies for the inconvenience that this has caused you. I know that you're not suppose to see ads when you are enrolled to a Premium account. Here's one useful article:

Hope this link helps.
