When asking at the time or the weather it sits there and it thinks when asking it to turn off lights turn on lights or anything with automation it will work just fine when asking who I am and replies back to my username when I tell it to find a phone it's confused who I am I've been on a support call with one of the Google support numbers and they told me I need all three new devices but I don't understand they were working yesterday fine

Hey all, thank you again for your patience.
The team has rolled out a fix for this issue. If you're still encountering the behavior, please make sure all of your devices are up to date. If it persists, please let us know here on the Community.
12-30-2024 08:49 AM
Note: all devices have been factory reset Wi-Fi has been reset multiple times multiple different nests have been trying to connect to a hotspot and still have the same result
12-30-2024 09:03 AM
Same here. If I ask my Google device to turn a light on or off or do something within the house, it responds. However if I'm asking it for any internet-related information like weather, general questions, it just sits there. This just started within the last day or two. Anyone else having this issue?
12-30-2024 09:40 AM
I am so glad I am not alone in this. I have also done all the above in trying to fix it.. Guess it's a bug in software updates or servers themselves.
12-30-2024 11:15 AM
Having the same problem too. I think it might be related to the Android 15 update
12-30-2024 11:30 AM
I am still on Android version 14. For what it's worth, I called my brother who also has Google nest units. He said that he lost internet connection to them yesterday, but unplugging them for 30 seconds and plugging them back in everything is working again. That was not the case when I tried mine

Happy that i'm not alone in this nightmare, hope assistance will help us
12-30-2024 08:29 PM
I'm also having the same problem. I have 9 google home device and none of them respond to questions like, what time is it; what is the weather, etc. They will control devices I have added to Google Home but not answer almost any other questions, it just spins and then does nothing. I have spent an entire day rebooting speakers, rebooting network devices, routers, etc. and nothing. I'm completely frustrated and losing my patience with Google. There is no one to call or email at Google, this is it. They are like Microsoft now. You can't contact them at all. If someone from Google reads these posts, please help as this is ridiculous and you are going to lose a lot of customers!
12-30-2024 08:45 PM
Same here. In addition to weather, time requests just makes all my speakers just blink with the "thinking" lights but delivering zero response, it does the same thing for play music from my youtube music account. Not happy. And I just bought another speaker on Black Friday.
12-30-2024 09:01 PM
Issues seems to be equal for all of us. Called assistance but no way to solve, now i look forward for email help. I guess that it's a server problem, not related to hardware, mine are pretty new
12-30-2024 09:09 PM
I've checked the location settings, nest account settings, google account settings rebooted the nest wifi, even removed and reinstalled the new speaker, and ... nothing.
Who did you email?
12-31-2024 01:14 AM
try https://support.google.com/googlenest?hl=en#topic=7029677 the follow instruction to speak with an operator
12-31-2024 12:15 AM
Yup all of my Google home speakers just sit there thinking when I ask it to do something. I have to ask it it 2 or 3 times before it finally responds.
Happening on all three devices with everyone in the house
12-31-2024 12:16 AM
I have found a workaround for now the problem seems to be with the Google account itself with a alternate email I have I made a new home and everything works but there's an interesting quirk if adding the broken Google account to the now functional home on the alternate account will break the alternate home but then we'll be fixed if the broken account is removed which I wish I knew that before I deleted my entire house so I could have migrated it before then though I'm not sure if migrating would work because of my short testing a migrated Google home would get confused and forget how to do anything and respond with I don't know how to do that whether it be asking how to change a light or what's the time
12-31-2024 12:33 AM
For people who want to know how to get to support go to your Google home go down to your settings find customer support then click on the three dots in the top right corner click on help and it should bring you to a page where you can call a support number to a Google support center

Same problem herer (Europe). Sidenote: I got a google nest hub gen.2 and that one seems to be working fine.
[edit: the nest hub acts the same as the speakers now. Not responsive when asking anything that requires internet]
The google Nest speakers (both the big as the mini ones) just flash their leds from left to right and then dont do anything.
What also seems to be working is if you ask to play a playlist on spotify. Seems main problem is controlling other IOT devices with the google speaker (tado, hue,...). I guess the reason why it does not work is because control in my case needs to be done over the cloud (HA integrations). So that seems to be fitting with what other people say: anything internet related fails.
Additional: what strikes me is the following while typing I was also testing what works/does not work. Seems when I say: set heating to 21*C, it responds as it should. When I say set heating to 23*C it does nothing. Same for activating light scenes: activate scene bright works, switching ligts on/off works in most cases. Activating other scenes does not.
So seems that dependent on what you ask it either works or doesnt. This is very worrying

i will wait for a while ,then in case of no solution i will be forced to migrate to the other competitor, hope it wll not happen
12-31-2024 04:30 AM
Hi All,
Same exact issue here since yesterday (30th) in the UK; icon spins away and nothing's happening.
All my google devices are affected (nest hub, mini, google home).
Interestingly enough, the google assistant on my phone seems to be working no problem.
I have logged a support ticket earlier this morning and waiting reply...

Just received email from assistance, they say that it's a known bug and they are working on it,they told me to wait for future upgrades but no expected date for solving. We are on high seas,as we use to say in Italy 😂
12-31-2024 10:13 AM
I found a previous instance on this community boards with similar problems back in 2022 and it seems it didn't get fixed for months. I hope that's not the case here.
12-31-2024 01:03 PM
I just spent over two hours with somebody at google trying various troubleshooting "fixes" and even videoing putting all my speakers together next to the router and asking to play music. Pandora worked just fine, but YT Music failed. No answers, no fixes. I'm not confident that this isn't an epic waste of time.
12-31-2024 01:10 PM
yesterday 1 hour with operator but no way, this time is very hard,i'm pessimist
12-31-2024 02:10 PM
1st tier "troubleshooting" is almost certain a waste of time.
However, the more people log tickets for the same issue, the faster will acknowledge that there's an issue.
Although, I'm not expecting anything going forward any time soon, being new year and all.

Response from google support:
"Thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest Customer Care Team.
We are writing to inform you of a temporary interruption with Google Assistant functionality on your Google Speakers.
Our engineering team is currently investigating the issue and working diligently to restore full functionality as soon as possible.
In the meantime, we appreciate your patience and understanding"
At least they acknowledge the issue.
Now we play the waiting game...

I too am having the problems with Google Home responses. It started on Monday or Tuesday, just like everyone else.
I have a suspect. Sometime very recently, perhaps Monday, something popped up and asked if I would like to try Gemini as a replacement for the standard Google Assistant. I don't think I switched but I might have temporarily switched off the Google Assistant. Who knows? Perhaps Google Home asking the question caused it to alter the settings. Or maybe I turned it off and then turned it back on.
The prompt looked like this:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gJA5BtHYedq7JvQMkxKoBNby7yjVZY0A/view?usp=sharing
Anyway, just a piece of information that might help the tech people looking into the problem.
01-02-2025 03:01 AM
I dont think it is related to either using google or gemini assistant on your phone. Tried both. Same problem. However, I do think it is related to Gemini, but at Google's side of the service. Might be that in the backend (of their datacenters) they start or attempt to start use Gemini as primary and handing off tasks to the old Google Assistant and vice versa and something was messed up on that level though
01-02-2025 03:05 AM
Sounds like a plausible explenation.
From the client side experience, feels like an API is not there to action the request, hence the "spinning away until time out".
"Let's push this cowboy workaround to production in the middle of public holidays, what can go wrong?"
01-02-2025 03:20 AM - edited 01-02-2025 03:20 AM
It seems to be the API in the smart devices indeed. Just finished cheking about any smart enabled device (lights, thermostats, Shelly relais linked to Homeassistant and exposed to google, name it) using the google assistant app on my phone. All work when using the phone as voice interface.
So it is definitively an API issue between the google enabled smart speakers and their backend
01-02-2025 03:22 AM
Thanks for clarifications, anyway it's an issue that we can solve,it's up to them,we only can wait and hope
01-02-2025 06:17 AM
Thanks Bill, someone else along this thread mentioned the same thing regarding Gemini. At least with mine, I did double check to make sure that I was still on Google Assistant, and not Gemini. I did verify it after hunting through a whole bunch of settings that my Google Gemini is not my primary system, I'm still on Google Assistant.
Another thought though, for everyone out here. Who is your current internet provider? I'm wondering if it's just random, or is it specific to one ISP? I'm on FIOS.
01-02-2025 02:58 AM
Since a lot in the house is having a dependency on those speakers (not critical, but still) they should have had a solution within hours, not days. I also run home assistant. That one has never failed me. Since they also start building smart speakers that can work locally, I really will start thinking switching over to be independent from internet at least for home control using voice.
Being a software architect myself it is kind of striking that this kind of things happen with a fully public service where you know if it breaks it affects millions of users. They should first thoroughly beta test any change they push either to devices, either in their own datacenters.
Something tells me this has to do with the Gemini rollout they try to do in an attempt to stay ahead of the competition... 🤔
01-02-2025 03:09 AM
This time the problem is huge, i think that it will need a long time and not sure they solve it.I alreqdy have amazon echo in my amazon basket...
01-02-2025 03:17 AM
echoes are even worse... Way more limited in terms of functionality and horrendous mobile app
01-02-2025 03:20 AM
yes but at least they answer..
01-02-2025 03:35 AM - edited 01-02-2025 03:35 AM
For now 🤣😂.
I am definitively going to start to look into some speakers that do not depend on internet for e.g. controlling heating and lights in the house. No issue if they do not provide any other information. Reason for this is not so much the current issue with google, but the dependency on internet. I always have had the idea that in your house, basic functionalities such as light and heating need to work als long as electricity is available. So:
- Need to be able to control lights manually (dumb switches to turn on/off, eventually equipped with a shelly relais to optionally control them with one or another platform. But no internet should be required in a worst case scenario
- Heating: Currently cotrolled via electronic valves and a central thermostat. But if my home network implodes it takes me like half an hour to replace them with mechanical valves that do not require a thermostat
So same vision for the speaker thing: When internet works, full functionality, when internet fails: reduced functionality (switch on/off lighting and heating). When home network fails: fall back on the above.
So most probably will turn to kind of a hibrid solution between google speakers for generic stuff and home assistant driven smart speakers

Tested just now ,everything it's working!!! Hope it is definitely resolved, let's see in the next days
01-02-2025 01:19 PM
Same Here, seems to be working for me too. Still testing. Let's hope that's the end of this!
01-02-2025 02:34 PM
Me, too. I'm hopeful they fixed it permanently. I figured they were working on it 12/31 when it was finally able to get YouTube Music playing again (albeit with a different song on every speaker in the house!)

Hi there,
Thank you for reaching out. I understand that you are having inconveniences with Google Assistant on your Google Nest speaker or display I apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing. We are aware of this situation, and I will inform you as soon as I have any updates.
Regards,
Manuel

Hi Manuel,
It has been a few days now of intermittent or not at all assistant availability.
Will it be possible to provide an estimate or how close is google to a fix please?
For such a mission critical (?) service, I would like to assume that google has an SLA tied to it.
By the way, this issue has made the news. So it's more than a few geeks complaining in a forum 😉
