Basic Setup - control TV with Chromecast

RedWallaby

Hi,

Is there a simple guide to setting up a system with a TV, Chromecast, Universal Remote (RM4C with Broadlink Account), Nest Mini and Google Home App (and account)?

Currently I have it working but it is clunky and I can't get Spotify to default play on the TV (via the Chromecast).

I have a Room setup (Living Room) with 2 tiles - 'Display' and 'Living Room Nest'

And Linked to you - 'TV'

The 'TV' is the RM4C device and commands such as "Turn On the TV"/"Turn Off the TV" generally work.

Also "Play Spotify on the Display" but commands such as "Play Spotify" plays Spotify on the Nest Mini.

The Chromecast is powered by the TV USB and is not on when the TV is off, so there needs to be a delay between turning on the TV and starting Spotify on the Chromecast.

Following instructions ....., 1 Open Google Home App, 2 Tap Home, 3 Touch and hold your device (Display I presume?), 4 Tap Device Settings, 5 Choose a default playback device: For music and audio: Tap Audio. ... , 6 Select your default playback device

I get to 5 and select Audio but options available are Groups - None Added, Group delay correction - 77 ms, and Surround sound mode - Auto-detect

No option for selecting a default playback device.

Any recommendations or How to documents on setting up my system?

Thanks

Hi RedWallaby,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community.

I understand how important it is to enjoy music on your preferred audio output. Let me help you. When you tap the Audio option you should see the Default playback device as the first available option. Since it’s not showing, let's try some troubleshooting.

Check if your Google Home app is updated by going to the App store for iOS and Playstore for Android. You can also try to force close and reopen the app or reboot your phone. If these steps did not fix it you can uninstall and reinstall the Google Home app.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

Juni

Thanks for your response.

I have reloaded Google Home and there is no difference.

Settings options are:

General

(i) Device information

🚹Recognition and Sharing

-------------------------------------------------------

Device features

🖥Ambient mode

💻Video

📞Audio

🗑Remove Device

Note symbols I show are representations of Google Home symbols

There is no option for Default playback device.

(I wont be able to check other options, if available, until after next week, I am away with on an Rural Fire Service Strike Team assisting flood relief)

Hi RedWallaby,

Got it. Thanks for trying that. Sorry that you are still experiencing the issue. For us to further isolate the issue try to use another phone and observe if it will make a difference.

Keep me posted. .

Thanks,

Juni

Hey RedWallaby,,

How was your device? Have you tried to use a different phone?

No, I don't have a different phone, nor do I understand how menu options would vary?

Thanks for your replies but it seems fairly poor system if an App offers different menu options based on the type of phone when it is meant to control a 3rd device.

Hey RedWallaby,

Please note that using a different phone will help us further isolate the issue. Also, there are slight differences on the Google Home app settings and how you can control a third-party device when using Android and iOS devices. This is due to the restrictions and security set by the manufacturer of the device. Moving forward, please try these steps below on how to access default TV and speakers on the Google Home app:

  1.  Make sure your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your Chromecast or speaker.
  2. Open the Google Home app.
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. At the top right, tap Settings > Audio, then:
    1. To choose the TV or speaker you want to use when you play music, tap Default music speaker.
    2. To choose your preferred TV, tap Default TV.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

Thanks for the follow up.

As I stated, I do not have another phone, and that being the only solution offered I have given up trying to use Google Home.

Hey RedWallaby,

I understand. To confirm, have you checked if there's any default TV set on the Google Home app?
