Google Home cannot connect to my Google home mini

davidm0321

My Google Home Mini has been reset after moving. However, my Google Home is unable to communicate with it, after several attempts + resetting my router, uninstalling and reinstalling Google Home. Google Home finds my mini quickly, but I continue to receive this error message. What are my next steps?

Hey davidm0321,

Thanks for bringing this up. I know how challenging it can be when you're having issues setting up your Google Home Mini - we'd love to help.  I have some troubleshooting steps I'd like you to try:

  1. Make sure that mobile data is off.
  2. Move your Google Home Mini within 15-20 ft. away from the router to get enough signal from your network.
  3. Reboot your Google Home Mini and router by disconnecting them from the power source and leave them unplugged for 1 minute. Once done, plug them back one at a time with intervals.
  4. Turn WiFi on and off on the mobile setup device.
  5. Try to use a different phone and see if you will have the same issue.
  6. If it is still the same, try to manually connect to the device’s hotspot from your phone or tablet’s Wi-Fi settings.
    1. Go to the Wi-Fi settings on your mobile device.
    2. Open the list of available WiFi networks and look for an available network with the name “GoogleHomeXXXX" (where XXXX is a random number).
      1. Note: If you previously set up your device and have not factory reset it since it got kicked off of the network, look for the name of the device that you assigned to it in the list of available networks on your mobile device (Example: “Kitchen Home").
    3. If you can successfully connect to the speaker or display's SSID in your WiFi settings, open the Google Home app and try to set up the device.

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

Unfortunately, none of these steps worked.

I’m having similar issues connecting a brand new Nest Hub. I’ve tried all those steps…

On my first attempt to connect, all steps were going as they are listed in the online guide, once I had to leave the room to enter my wifi password from the router, my phone and hub didn’t complete the set up.
I spent hours trying to connect and never passed the pairing stage.

My phone would find the hub and then the connection would fail and a prompt would come up to make sure local network access is enabled for the home app in privacy settings….this wasn’t the issue.

Any other ideas on how to troubleshoot?

Hey davidm0321,

Thanks for the quick response. Have you tried using a different mobile/tablet? Also, may I know the make and model of your device use to set up the speaker?

@Angie__:  To eliminate network issues, please try setting up your device using a mobile hotspot. Please note that you will need two mobile devices for this setup (one will serve as a router and the other to be used to set up your Google Nest Hub).

Keep me posted.

Cheers,

Muddi

I know I purchased the speaker in 2020, but I am not home to get the make and model at the moment. How do I adjust the router password for the mini? I'm not sure I understand that step. Thanks.

I am still having the same problem with setting up my home mini.  As before it goes through all the setup steps right up to selection of the network, asks if I want to use saved password (I've tried entering the password manually) and then says "could not communicate with your home mini".  On my mobile phone settings, if I connect to Living Room Speaker.k as in your previous suggestions it connects, but with no internet. Spent many hours on this now.  The home mini worked perfectly well with my previous router.

Hey davidm0321,

Sorry for the delays. You don't need to adjust the settings on your router. If you have a dual-band router - you can try to connect your speaker to a different band (2.4 GHz or 5.0 GHz).  You can also try setting up your device to a mobile hotspot to eliminate network issues.

@quaycs: Try setting up your device on a mobile hotspot to eliminate network issues.

@Angie_: How's your device? Are you able to connect it to your network?

Looking forward to your response.

Muddi

Hi Muddi

Still no joy I'm afraid.  Tried connecting my phone to a BT Hotspot and tried both 2.4 and 5 mhz settings (my mini is 2.4). Same message "cannot communicate with Google Home".  Just don't get it - perfect with my old router.

Hi quaycs,

Apologize for the delays. Could you tell us when and where you purchased your device? Also, when you connect it to a different network, did you reset your device first?

Keep us posted.

Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier.  I've pretyy well given up trying to get my BT router to connect to my google home.  Very disappointed - it was working perfectly with my old router.  The google device is basically a useless piece of kit - probably put it on ebay.  Thanks for your efforts to help.
