Google Home slow to respond

Axon54
Community Member

Over the last 2 weeks my Google Home is very slow to respond. It sits and the lights spin after a command and many times it does not execute the command. Also, when I tell it to play a radio station it plays it on a nest speaker in another room. I have rebooted it by unplugging several times plus 2 factory resets and no change.

Hi everyone,

Sorry to hear about the slow responses from your Google Nest speakers. If you're currently experiencing this, here are some things you should check first:

  • Check the distance of the Nest speaker-- it should be within range from the router or network preferably within 15-20 feet for a good and stable connection.
  • Make sure that there are no other devices or appliances that may interfere with the connection. For example: a TV, microwave oven, or other electronic device.

Once you've checked on those, give these troubleshooting steps a try:

  1. Unplug your Google Nest speaker and plug it back in after a few minutes. It may also be helpful to unplug your router to refresh its network settings and to avoid congestion on the network.
  2. If that doesn't do the trick, perform a complete reset and follow the prompts to set up.

If you don't see improvement after performing the steps above, please give us a call or chat via this link: https://bit.ly/3adTfGB. We'll be happy to look into this further!

Best,

Princess

Hi Axon54,

Thank you for reaching out. I am sorry to hear that your Google Home is responding slowly. I understand your concern and would be more than happy to help find a solution. First, I have some quick questions.

  • Which Google Home device do you have?
  • Which firmware is your device on?
  • Does your device display any error messages?
  • Is your device only slow during voice commands?

I appreciate your patience and look forward to your response!

I have a Google Home original.

Firmware is 1.56.264660

There are no error messages but what it does is when I give a command test command is very often answered on my nest mini in another room. Not always but most often. If the command is answered in Google Home the lights spin a long time and then the command is answered. Today I was playing a radio station and told Google to stop and it took like 3 minutes to finally stop playing.

It is slow on voice commands yes but my nest mini is just fine for speed of commands

Hello Axon54,

Thank you for your patience! I have some more questions regarding this issue.

  • What is the distance of your Google Home device from the Wi-Fi router?
    •  Ideally, it should be placed within 15-20 ft of the router.
  • Could you please try to reboot (unplug/re-plug) your router?
  • Could you also make sure that the device is not near a microwave, TV or any appliance that may interfere with the connection?
  • If the issue is still occurring after the troubleshooting steps above, could you please try to connect your Google Home to a mobile hotspot or on a different Wi-Fi network? Does the same issue still happen?

I look forward to your response, I appreciate your time and understanding.

Mine has been working great at the same location,  nothing changed except the google home respond poorly,  it can't be WiFi related

Hi there,

It's been a few days since we have heard from you. Just checking in, were you able to see my reply back to you?  Please keep me updated, let's get this issue resolved!

I am another user with the same problem. Started a couple of weeks ago after working fine for a couple of years. Specifically when I asked Google home to turn on or off a light it is completely inconsistent. It will tell me it is turning off the light and the lights on the home device will spin but the actual device does not turn off or it is delayed for a long time. Sometimes the delay can be 10 or 15 seconds and other times it can be a couple of minutes. Sometimes it won't turn off at all. Started doing this a couple of weeks ago.

I have the same issue, it started over a month ago.  When I set a timer it takes 10-15 seconds to respond and then sometimes it starts right away.   All the timers go off too, even upstairs.  It is driving me crazy shouting to turn them all off.  It never used to be like this.

Exactly my situation too. Google home was working great for years but recently it lingers before executing some voice commands

Same here. Followed all the resets.  Its less than 15 feet from the router and modem and the newer versions work.   This is a first gen.  Starting to believe based on the comments its being throttled by google

Same issues here too. Worked fine for a couple of years then after Christmas it struggles to recognise commands and is extremely slow at responding to anything.

It's January 15th 16th 2022 I've been having the same issue with my first gen I have Google hub router no issue otherwise it's just not responding fast like before it feels like Google is trying to make us buy the newer hubs.

I have the same problem with my Google home max for a week now. It worked flawlessly before. Very slow to turn off lights - ten to twenty seconds delay.

Not sure what exactly I did but I finally got mine working again normally.

First I tried forgetting the wifi network setup via the Google home app. Then I tried to re-configure it for the same network. It wouldn't connect at all. My internet and wifi were working fine otherwise.

So I power cycled the Google home unit... And on reboot it still refused to connect to wifi. That was in the morning. So I just left it like that and when I came back later in the day, it had reconnected itself and was working normally again.

Mine was slow for about a week straight before this.

Thanks for the info.  When I went into the Home app and told the Google Home to reboot, it came back and worked fast (like normal) for a day or so and then it reverted to the really slow response again.

Please monitor your progress and let us know if it slows down again after a few days.  It'll be interesting if rejoining the WiFi network helped fix your problem for sure.

Thanks

On the back of each unit near the mic button is a reset button.  Hold it until it resets.  Go back into Home and find it again and set it up like a new unit.

Thank you for the speedy reply. And when you say you put them on a different network do you mean you just changed the network ID or SSID to a different name?

I have a dual band router.  2.4 and 5 ghz.  I just put them on the other side of the router on the 5 ghz side.

Reset the units that are slow and have your home reset them up.  I also put them on a different network.   All is well now.

Can you provide a little more information on what you did specifically and how you did it?

Hi Frances,

The Google Home is within 2 ft of the router. I have rebooted the router. The Google home is working better right now but still a littke slow. My nest minis work perfectly not sure the home is not.

Hello Axon54,

Thank you for your reply back. Could you please try some more steps?

  1. Try to connect your device to a mobile hotspot.
  2. Try to connect your device to a different WiFi network.

Does this issue still occur with different networks?

Please let me know, thank you!

Hi Frances,

Different user with the same issues I have tried this and it is still laggy. Mine is 1.5 fr from the router on a 5Ghz band with a mesh network and I have 1G down. Can you help explain what may be causing the lag if not the device?

Axon54

This did not help. It is still very slow at times. When I tell it to stop it keeps playing Tune In fir 10 seconds then shuts off. Oh and when I say hey google the music does not stop. Keeps playing

I have the same problem.  Have tried rebooting and connecting it to my mobile hotspot.  it is still very laggy at responding to commands.  cast firmware 1.56.282045.  Issue also started around October

me too... i have 2 mini's side by side. One answers my question in 2 second and the other in 1 to 2 minutes....

Having the same issues as everyone else.  It's almost unusable

Same problem here, for a Google Nest Display.

Cast firmware: 1.56.277269

System firmware version: 4.20210608.1.1146.

When I say "Hey Google", the lights start spinning, but you see the titles of tabs behind it. When I follow up with the command, like "turn on kitchen", it takes about 60 seconds to print TURN ON KITCHEN on the screen. Then it says "there was a glitch. Try again in a few seconds".

Tue unit is about 10ft from the router. I have tried bit 2.4 and 5Ghz bands, hardware and software reset the Display. No change

Not sure it has anything to do with it, but the problems seems to be worse since I upgraded from Pixel 3a to 5a three weeks ago. Also, my wife changed from Pixel 2 to 5a about 2 months ago. The display was responding to her commands ok, until I change to my 5a. Since then, it is ignoring her, despite her being a family member... It worked until a few days ago, when I put the Display in Guest mode.

Weirder and weirder, for sure!

Same issue here. Slow / not responding. Have you introduced new firmware upgrade that causes this?

Gap
Community Member

No I have not intentionally installed any firmware updates. Do you mean on Google home devices or software or?

paljoak

I meant, if Google have introduced a buggy firmware update… 🤷‍♂️

Axon54

Looks like not only is my Google Home slow to respond so it’s any support from Google

They have proven time after time how mediocre they are.

TriLife

I agree with the slow response. Google used to be much better than that.

However, the slow response of the Home Display resolved itself since yesterday evening...

Newest version, not sure if it is any different from my last post

Cast firmware: 1.56.277269

System firmware version: 4.20210608.1.1146

I have the same issue: google home for a few months now lags in response.  NOTHING has changed.  Not location, not router, not network.  No new appliances or other new equipment to interfere.  Frankly, Alexa app in our Ecobee thermostat will answer before the google home app will.  When I unplug it will respond quickly for a few questions and then - again - the inexplicable lag before the device answers.  It used to be my go-to device, but unless there's a fix, I don't see the value.

Let me know if this ever mysteriously starts working again or if you find a resolution. Mine continues to misbehave inexplicably. I have tried everything I can think of and invest in a lot of time trying to get to the bottom of it.

Axon54

I too have tried everything possible but the lack of response from Google is most frustrating. I spend far too much time on this issue. I’m very close to dumping the whole system.

Update: after posting my problem, I received many replies from people saying they had the same problem.  Interestingly, two days ago my google home started working normally again. I hesitated to put this out immediately if it was a fluke, but it seems to be working fine now. If google fixed it then thanks.  Hopefully all the others were or will be fixed too.

Same here. Waiting 20 seconds until lights actually go out. SOOOO irritating. What's going on Google?
