Google nest mini wifi issues

Laurenneale

I’m trying to set up my Google nest mini I have added the MAC address and connected it to my Uni wifi. It says it has connected then comes up with a message saying something went wrong make sure you have enabled local network access. I have done this and is still coming up with the same message and I have tried turning it off and on multiple times. Can anyone help?

Fundamentally, Google does not support those kind of Wi-Fi networks that require you to login first or register the device for it to access the internet.

On university Wi-Fi networks, they often enable a feature called client / AP isolation, which is a security feature that prevents devices connected to the Wi-Fi from communicating with each other. That's good thing for security, but not good for your speaker, as it means your speaker cannot communicate with your iPhone or iPad.

There are a few workarounds:

Although also unsupported by Google, you can try to use a phone or tablet as a Wi-Fi hotspot. However, this will then use your mobile data plan, which could be expensive for you depending on the data plan you have with your carrier. Note you will need 2 devices to set this up.

    • Turn on the Wifi hotspot feature on a phone or tablet. If you're not sure how to do this, refer to the manufacturer's support website.
    • Connect a second phone or tablet to that Wifi hotspot.
    • You can then use that second phone or tablet to setup your device and connect it to the Wifi hotspot on the first phone or tablet.

Another workaround, if you're able to use  a wired network connection instead, would be to invest in your own cheap router and connect your devices to that router instead.
