Google speaker keeps playing music after I tell it to stop

Palazzo

Hi,

I've seen a few threads with the issue that when asking a Google Home device to "Stop" when playing media, it restarts again after a few minutes. There haven't been any posted solutions.

What I discovered when playing "Times Radio" via TuneIn on my home mini was that the "Hey Google, Stop" command only puts the media into a Paused mode rather than cancelling it completely as you would expect.

I discovered this by checking the device status on my Google Home android app.

I tried a few other commands "Cancel", "Stop Playing" etc and all only seem to pause the media.

It then spontaneously seem to restart after 5 minutes or so.

I've been using this device for probably 2 years now without this issue - it just appeared in the last couple of weeks, so I assume it's a bug in a recent software update.

Can someone confirm the bug and when it will be fixed, or, if it's a new "feature", what commands can be used to completely stop the media playing?

Also, realised I may have misunderstood so I tried the same just playing on my phone. On the phone it ignored a stop command completely when playing via Spotify. When playing media via Tunein it paused on the same way it does on the Mini.

When I used my app to play and stop music on my office speaker it worked correctly.
It seems to be only when issuing the command from to the mini directly.
Hope this helps.

I've also been experiencing this bug for the past few weeks while listening to radio stations (TuneIn) on my Google speaker groups. The "Stop" command stops the audio but it starts up about five minutes later and I have repeat the "Stop" command. Like a previous poster, I've also come home to a radio station playing on my Google speakers after telling it to "Stop" before going out. This bug has not been fixed as of about 10 minutes ago as I just experienced it again on my Google Hub Max.

I had the same issue I'd  tell it to stop and it ignors me. I found out that you have to tell it to play music then tell it to stop as if it didn't recognize that it was playing music to stop... very frustrating!

I also have the same issue with TuneIn. I listen to J Idols Project Radio and it plays through tunein, i will tell it to stop and after 5-10 minutes it will start playing again

I'm having a somewhat similar problem with my Google Mini where I'll say "play (xyz radio station) for 1 hour" and it will confirm "streaming (xyz) bedroom speaker will stop playing in 1 hour" and yet the hour will pass and the speaker will keep playing the radio station, without even a pause at the 1 hour mark. Similarly I have a routine set up to play a different radio station in the morning for an hour and it also will keep playing until I manually stop it. I feel like this started happening a month or so ago; prior to that the playback would stop at the requested time. Frustrating!

I have exactly the same issue you described. I'll tell my google mini to play music for 5 minutes or whatever time I say, and it does not stop even though it confirmed my command. I tried it on Google home speaker and 2 other google minis in the other bedrooms, they all had the same issue. I called Hel Center today and I was informed that they are aware of the issue. DO SOMETHING GOOGLE!!!

I came here looking for a solution after doing a factory reset. Hopefully an update fixes this soon

I have exactly the same problem on my google hub. I have it set for 15 minutes to play when I go to bed and it tells me it will go off in 15 minutes but now it does not it will play all night. It never used to do this ever till just recently it’s a pain!

Also experiencing this exact same issue. Its so unbelievably frustrating and no longer renders my google home mini "hands free". I use the "Hey Google, play XX FM radio" command daily and can no longer stop it from playing through voice command. I HAVE to stop casting through the app on my phone. This only happens on ONE of my two devices. Been 3 or 4 months trying to figure this out. GOOGLE HELP!!

It would appear that this is not simply a case of mini's having the issue. I just purchased some Nest Audio speakers and the same issue persists.

Yes, my Google Nest Hub is behaving the same way as my Minis. Ugh!

The other thread seems to cover an even bigger issue for some, but unclear if its related to this one, that devices don't stop playing at all if told to stop after a certain period of time.

Of course it may be linked if "stop after 10 minutes" is now interpreted as "pause after 10 minutes".

On the Nest Hub 2nd gen, problem is with the gesture feature. The sensor gets stuck in on, off, or both randomly.

Try telling people to turn off the setting for gesture - play/pause

I am having exactly the same issue. I have 4 Google Home Minis and one Home speaker. When Tunin is playing I tell it to stop when I go out, when I come back it's playing again. This is VERY ANNOYING. If I tell it off or stop about 3 times I then ask it if is off and it responds "got it, all stop". If I say "all stop it says "command not understood "... THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED

And I would like to reiterate that I and other people are having this issue with apps that are  NOT TuneIn. My issue is with Apple Music. Others use other apps. Clearly it’s a Google issue - not an issue with third party apps.

As I started this thread, I should mention that in an not suffering with the issue of playing restarting at the moment.

The device still pauses when told to stop, but it just seems to stop completely after 10-15 minutes.

As noted on one of my earlier posts it may be down to specific conditions that occur while it's paused (e.g. Maybe the buffer holding paused content overflows in some circumstances causing it to start playing again)

I’m having this exact problem too. It’s been months now and the only thing that works is having to go into the google home app and manually stop casting. Just telling it to stop casting only puts it in the weird pause where it comes back on all by itself.  It’s quite annoying! I’ve tried every way of asking it to stop that I could think of! Lol

This happens with mine as well. Extremely annoying. Especially when I'm in bed and it keeps turning on by itself. Ready to chuck it out the window

This issue is still happening to me, too. It sounds like it should be a simple fix from Google but nothing yet. In fact, this never used to be a problem so what probably happened was that Google rolled out an update that inadvertently introduced this issue.

This is still happening, and did not happen before for me.  It's annoying, and when a speaker just starts playing in the middle of the night from my garage, or our closet, it's upsetting.  This needs to be fixed, it is pretty easy to replicate,

Any updates? This is ridiculous bug

I have just completed testing this on my Nest Wi-Fi extender and it functions correctly (stops music playing when asked to) and can confirm it is stopped and not just paused from my phone.

Please try it on a Google mini speaker and let us know. No issue with wifi, just the Google speakers.

Now that's very strange!

Completed testing on Google Mini and can confirm that it functions correctly (stops music playing when asked to) and can confirm it is stopped and not just paused from my phone.

Interestingly though, when I asked it to stop, the lights did their usual left-to-right lightshow and then they all remained lit while the speaker let out one last chirp (as if it really didn't want to obey the command) before all went dark and I waited 15 minutes to confirm that it would not come back on (which it didn't).

How did you do this without wifi? Im a little confused

I didn't do it without Wi-Fi. You can't. SallyinFlorida was simply confirming that there isn't any issue with the Wi-Fi specific devices that also work as Assistant speakers and that the issue seems to be solely with the standalone Google/Nest speakers.

You're lucky. I'm not the only one with this issue. I was told by the Google Help Desk that this is a known issue they are still working on.

Faced the same issue on a Nest Wifi Point by listening to TuneIn radio. Apparently "stop" indeed pauses the cast/stream but when paused for about 20-30 minutes the cast automatically stops. So no need to push the "stop casting" button in the Home app.

The problem started happening after Tune In started interrupting the station with more commercials. Up until a few months ago, a Tune In commercial would only play when I first turned the radio on. I think when Tune In started interrupting the station with an ad afterwards, is when it turns Google Home back on. I did the reset on Google Home, which is a PITA and it didn't help. I complained to both Tune In and the radio station. The radio station never replied and Tune In wants me to show them a video. A video is not going to help them fix the issue and is very inconvenient because we don't know when the issue will happen. Just listen to your listeners' complaints and fix the issue.

Home Max speaker exhibits the exact same behavior.

Pausing only at the Stop or Cancel commands happens on other sources, including Youtube Music, but that's not the end of the world.   But Tunein Radio restarts the stream after this pause, which really-really bad.  Especially so after my bedtime routine which plays a station softly, then goes to sleep after 35 minutes... imagine the pleasure of waking up on somebody speaking in your bedroom 😞

I am having the same issue. I tell my nest speaker to stop, and it resumes playing by itself after 5-10 minutes. It’s been happening for more than a year. It happens on all my Google nest speakers. I only listen to Apple Music. I’ve reset them and resent the modem and nothing fixed it.

I think I found a workaround. Instead of just shutting down the Google Home or Nest by touching it or telling it to turn the radio off, I tell it: "Hey Google, turn the radio off for the rest of the day." That seems to work. If you want to listen later on, you can still do it. Will keep you posted if it stops working that way.

Cancel my 'solution'. The radio turned on again by itself yesterday after I issued the command "Hey Google, turn the radio off for the rest of the day.", so that doesn't work either. It just seemed to work for a while, but then again, sometimes just shutting it off works for a while. I never know when it's gonna happen again. I'm pretty sure it's TuneIn that started this crap by injecting commercials into the stream, but Google and the radio station should put pressure on TuneIn to fix it. I'm gonna try a different station and see if that fixes the issue. I doubt it.

I switched radio stations to another TuneIn station. That was 2 weeks ago. It hasn't started up on its own since. It appears that in my case at least, it is related to the station that I switched from.

🟩 I had the same problem recently and I found a simple solution.

1. Open TuneIn App

2. Go to Account, settings

3. Disable the auto play  (In the General section, first option with current TuneIn version 24.6.2)

🎉 Et voilà no more auto resume

🧐 If we investigate a bit, maybe our google home communicates with the TuneIn apis server a few minutes after we turn it off and that auto-play option is triggered....

J'ai rencontré le même problème de lecture qui se relance toute seule sur le google home mini

Le contournement est possible

Allez dans TUNEIN puis compte, réglages et ensuite désactiver Lecture automatique

Cela fonctionne pour moi normalement depuis

I don't have the tune-in app. Its Google's default radio. I have no access/control for it using tune -in.
