Google speaker keeps playing music after I tell it to stop

Hi,

I've seen a few threads with the issue that when asking a Google Home device to "Stop" when playing media, it restarts again after a few minutes. There haven't been any posted solutions.

What I discovered when playing "Times Radio" via TuneIn on my home mini was that the "Hey Google, Stop" command only puts the media into a Paused mode rather than cancelling it completely as you would expect.

I discovered this by checking the device status on my Google Home android app.

I tried a few other commands "Cancel", "Stop Playing" etc and all only seem to pause the media.

It then spontaneously seem to restart after 5 minutes or so.

I've been using this device for probably 2 years now without this issue - it just appeared in the last couple of weeks, so I assume it's a bug in a recent software update.

Can someone confirm the bug and when it will be fixed, or, if it's a new "feature", what commands can be used to completely stop the media playing?

Hey folks,

I'm checking in on this thread since it's been a while since it was last updated. There's no new news to share at this time, but I'll continue monitoring the thread and updating it as I know more.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hello ReneeSNL

Sorry to hear that.

I confirm this solution is working with TuneIn. No more problems but Not tested with other players

Can you explain in more detail? I dont have a tune-in app. Its not required to have. Its just googles default player, on its own without having the app. Which i assume is what most people are experiencing, so no resolution as of yet.

I don't think we have Google radio in my region. I am using TuneIn and the same problem appears since few weeks...  To block it I've desactivated the autoplay option I've blocked this bug. It's a workaround only with TUNEIN.

Maybe the Tunenin player is still re launched after few minutes (around 5) but with the auto play disabled  it is playing nothing.

I’m with you, Renee. I have just downloaded the TuneIn app, created an account and changed the settings as described here, but can’t find a way to link that account to google home. Google home says TuneIn is built in, but doesn’t provide a way, as far as I can see, to change any TuneIn settings. I have gotten “ads” on TuneIn saying I can opt out of sharing my personal info for advertising, but if you can’t link an account where you’ve made those changes, that’s not possible.

Does anyone have a solution for the mini not stopping even when it confirms music will stop after a certain number of minutes?

I am just testing this now ( I haven't tried to use the sleep timer for a few days) and it still does not work. I'm casting TuneIn and using their sleep timer for now. The majority of the time it works properly for me and occasionally restarts by itself (steph-io on this thread has a solution I need to apply to stop it from restarting).

Try testing it using the Google built in timer.

Hi Sally,  thanks for your reply. Good news for the shutting of Spotify after the time you instruct Google.

I've been trying to use it for weeks and it hasn't worked out properly yet.

I'll retry it to your suggestion.

Thanks again Sally for taking the time to answer.😀

Best regards,

Jeff

Thanks for the reply SallyinFlorida but right now, I am testing it using a different radio station that uses TuneIn on Google Home. So far, it has not turned back on, but sometimes it went for a week without turning back on but then started up again with the original radio station, which is why I doubt your solution will work on a long term basis- but it might! If my current test fails, I will try your solution. One thing I noticed is that different Google Home radio stations have different streaming apps besides TuneIn. One alternative that I tried uses a service called Odyssey.  If your solution doesn't work, I am going to try that.

Good news. I just tested my Google Home and Google mini. It played my music (Spotify) and stopped after the 20 min I told it to play!!

Something that might help you to debug if it's still not working.

I tried this solution with 2 Google Home mini not manufactured at the same time.

Device 1 & 2 are running with this versions in the same WIFI network

System Version: 324896

Cast software: 1.56.324896

lang: fr

Voice command I am using now that is working for me with the solution  OK Google  STOP

In the past I used ok google stop radio, ok google stop tunein radio

Any solution yet? It seems that Tune in interrupts stop by resuming radio after stop command and this has anything to do with wifi, reboot or massaging speaker. It only happens with the radio stations with tune in, Spotify or Amazon music plays and responds to commands just fine.

I've shared a solution 6 hours ago for TUNEIN 😉

I understand but I don't have tune in app. I use voice command and google speaker only.

Ditto for me. I don't have the TuneIn app. It's the default player for Google Home radio station streaming and as far as I know, there is nothing I can do about it except complain or not use it.

I was going to try your solution because I have autoplay set on my TuneIn app and have had it restart but I haven't had any problems since Jan.7 with TuneIn restarting on my Home Mini after the sleep timer in the app stops my radio station. I've been casting my radio station from TuneIn app on my phone to my  speaker until the sleep timer problem with the speaker is resolved. I don't know if TuneIn was updated.

This morning I tried "hey Google stop all the radio" and it didn't come back. Try it, it might work for you too.

I've been emailing TuneIn about this issue. This was their latest reply: Hello George,

Thank you so much for that information, We do apologize for the inconvenience that you are experiencing at this time.

However, I went ahead and did some checks and our developers are still in the process of having this resolved we do not have and estimated time on when this will be resolved as soon as we receive an update you will be notified about this.

Please feel free to reply to this email for additional assistance.

Sincerely,
Latifah

It has now been over a week since I followed a solution proposed by steph-io and am happy to say that all my Google audio devices (Audio/mini/hub and original home) are all stopping instead of pausing when I ask them to 'stop'.

  1. Open TuneIn (on phone) - you don't need to create an account or log-in
  2. Click on 'Profile'
  3. Click on Settings
  4. Turn off ALL options
  5. Voila!

I don't know if this will work the same with other players, but since TuneIn is the default for Google Assistant I think this will solve most people's issues getting their devices to stop when requested.

So you have to download to tune in app to your phone?

Yes.

Simply download it (if you don't already have it) and don't worry about creating an account.

It must set some hidden system settings for Assistant when  you make the changes that I outlined.

Fantastic, works like a charm. Now if we can only cure the random belching...

Thanks man. I'll try it 👍

I tried this and it did nothing. It still shows 'Paused' when I go into my Google Home. Considering Google is the king of ads and gets off snooping into other people's privacy, I'm sure they get aroused every time Tune-In starts playing another ad every 5 minutes after you tell it to stop the music. Not to mention I'm sure they get a big kick back from every ad that is played.

The only solutions that I've found to stop Tune-in from starting up again is to unplug the Google minis, but if I'm going to have to do that, I might as well just turn my radio on and off without Google spying on my every move. The only other option I've found is to throw them in the garbage.

Google has become way too invasive on our privacy, and I'm on the verge to throwing everything connected to Google, including my Android spy phone in the garbage. Two years ago I purchased an over the air Channel Master DVR from Channel Master. It also included the option to add Google Apps. I never used the Google part since I use my Roku for watching apps. A month ago since the DVR wasn't working correctly I decided to reset it. Guess what, now I can't even watch 'my' local TV stations though 'my' antenna without signing into my Google account first before it will initiate the DVR to even program the local TV stations. Google has become way to controlling and it's definitely time to move off the Google Grid.

I hadn't connected the dots until your post - but now that I notice it, it always 'resumes' straight into an Ad. Makes me think there's something defensive in the code to over-ride pausing when an Ad is running. Pretty disgusting.

That was my suspicion. Thank you for confirming it.

I too am experiencing the above issues on google home mini's.  Very frustrating.  I have to unplug it and plug it back in multiple times a day.

Hi I have the same issue since now couple of months. I asked Google to stop playing when listening radio on tunin. After some minutes it starts again. Very annoying.

I have contacted google about this in early December and it is still an issue. Streaming anything from Tune it, tell it to stop streaming, 5-10 minutes later an add plays then the music resumes. After a month and a half if they haven't found a solution, my solution is simply going to be unplugging them and getting an Alexa device or just none at all. Clearly not a priority.

I have already posted the solution.

I will put it here in case you missed it previously:

  1. Download the TuneIn app on your phone (if you don't already have it)
  2. Open TuneIn (on phone) - you don't need to create an account or log-in
  3. Click on 'Profile'
  4. Click on Settings
  5. Turn off ALL options
  6. Voila!

It must set some hidden system settings for Assistant when  you make the changes that I outlined.

appreciate the steps, however this did not seem to change anything for me

I have done this, yet it persists. Part of the problem with testing a solution is that, for me at least, the problem isn’t consistent — it only happens maybe 20% of the times that I tell it to “stop.”

I tried this. Didn't resolve anything though. Same issue persists. Thanks though.

This DOES NOT WORK. I have all my devices changed to those settings. It seemed to work for a couple of days but no good. I ask it to turn off when I go out but when I come back it's back on. A work around that works is call up a song on Spotify then order OFF.

GOOGLE FIX THIS sad sad sad

I am having the same issue on my google nest Hub Max. Sometimes it won't start playing the radio program  or it will play it and then won't stop. It pauses and says there was a  glitch and try again in a few minutes. I then have to unplug it or try several times till it finally stops

Same issue and it persists even after trying the tunein app setting fix. Google support is beyond useless on this, refusing to even admit there's a problem and saying "I am really sorry for the inconvenience but we have completed the troubleshooting".

One interesting thing I've noticed is that the 'stop' command literally disappears from the myactivity feed when the music resumes. Maybe that's a clue someone on here can make sense of.

LOL. Your forum message was delivered to my Gmail inbox and Google marked it with a warning that it was possibly dangerous. I guess because you criticized Google. I marked it not dangerous. It's the only one from this forum that Google marked as dangerous. Instead of worrying about emails that criticize them, they should worry about fixing this issue so that we DON'T criticize them.

This problem only happens for me on certain radio stations, others are fine. Doesn't matter what speaker I use, just what station. Getting in the habit of unplugging the speaker instead of asking it to stop. For me it's "Boom 97.3" out of Toronto that has the issue.

I’m not sure if this is a new clue to the problem or just a random glitch, but I seem to be unable to get google to stop playing during one of TuneIn’s injected ads. I was just listening to a radio station when, in the middle of a song, TuneIn played an ad. I told it to stop 3 times, but it kept playing. Only once the ad was over would it respond to my command to stop. (When checking from my ipad, it shows that mini speaker as merely paused after the command, but at least I’m not hearing it!)

TuneIn sucks. I started playing another station on my Google Home that uses Audacy- not TuneIn. Maybe the 'cure' for the TuneIn issue is to play the TuneIn station that you like, turn it off when you're finished, then play an Audacy station for a moment, then turn that off. Maybe your Google device will automatically turn TuneIn off when you start the Audacy station. I don't know if I'm going to experiment with that myself because I like this new Audacy classic rock station because it hardly has any talking or commercials- it's The Mountain 101.3. The only way I have been able to bring it up is to say, "Hey Google, play Froggy 101" Froggy 101 is another Audacy station but it plays country music. For some reason, saying "Hey Google, play Froggy 101", makes it play The Mountain 101.3- a classic rock station. LOL.
