I bought a Hub Max from a pawn shop. I brought it home, did a factory reset, but it still says it is linked to another account.
How do I get around this?

I'm just another Google Nest customer; you could try making sure your Nest Hub Max let you know that it was resetting after holding down both volume buttons for about 10 seconds:
