Hub photo's freezing

MargieMac

Moderator update: The topic discussed in this thread was resolved on 7/12/23. A new, similar conversation about this topic is currently happening here: Google Nest no longer displaying Photo Frame. Please feel free to join the discussion there!

---

I have two Google Hub and they are both freezing on photo's. My setting is every 5 seconds on both, but I see on other feedback they can freeze on any time frame setting.

I have had them for a couple of years and they have never done this, I wonder what changed.

Having the same issue. Just started recently on our Nest Hub Max. Have restarted Google Wifi and factory reset the Hub Max. It works for a while and then freezes.

Oddly, our smaller Nest Hub is working properly.

Hey everyone,

Seems like we've been seeing quite an increase in reports on this issue on the Nest Hub display wherein the photos are freezing. To help the team to further look into this, please send feedback on your device by saying, "Hey Google, send feedback," followed by the keywords: GHT3 Nest Hub photo's freezing. Learn more about how to send feedback on our Help Center.

Once you've submitted feedback, please let us know in the comments the type of Google Nest display you have, together with the firmware version.

@GameraFan: Thanks for sharing those links.

Cheers,

Muddi

My Photo Frame gets stuck on a photo and doesn't go to the next one.  Everything else works fine.  I've unplugged and messed with settings and it keeps happening.

Any tips appreciated.  Thanks.

Same exact thing is happening to me. Just bought my Nest Hub Max last weekend.  The photo slideshow worked perfect all week then I noticed it started to get stuck on photos yesterday. Would love to find a solution to this!!

Hey folks,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

I understand the feeling when you're having issues with your Google Nest Hub Max. Let's try to get to the bottom of this. A few questions: when did the issue start? Is it a shared photo?

Please set up a Live Album in the Google Home app. Follow the steps below to know-how:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap the Nest display > Settings Settings > Photo frame.
  3. Tap Google Photos > Select a photo album.
  4. Tap each face to include them in the Live Albums.
  5. Once finished, tap Confirm.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hello:

I've had the unit for 3 years and it just started happening about a week ago.  I did a factory reset and it got better briefly.  I don't use live albums.

Thanks.

Hi @tkamuddin are you able to make a bug report for this issue for the Nest team? I'd be happy to provide any device or app diagnostic data to support it. Thanks!

Hi Muddi

My Nest display is years old and has been working perfectly until recently when photos began to freeze. I have done many of the basic actions in the on line posts but there are no improvements and photos still freeze.

I DO NOT want “faces only” photos as your fix implies. I want all my photos.

So many Google customers are complaining that it must be obvious to Google that there has been a problem introduced by Google in new software.

Why burden Google users with having to provide info back on systems etc.

Google should have done a proper software rollout testing in the first instance.

Isn't it something how Google always puts it on all of us to do all of their testing and diagnostics. Maybe they should give all their employees Google displays and make them go home and use them themselves? It wouldn't take them long to figure out that they're actually as a problem and then they can be the ones to diagnose. What's wrong.

This does not work. I've tried using several different kinds of albums including live albums. The photo still gets stuck. Obviously it's related to some recent update. When will Google get this fixed. It seems to be something that should be fixed fairly quickly with so many people complaining about it.

Also:  I have an original Nest Hub at a different house (1,000 miles away) and it started doing the same thing.

Muddi,

Can you clarify what your role is as a "Community Specialist"?  Do you work for Goggle?  Are you in direct communication with their programmers and engineers?   Do you own a Google Hub or Hub Max yourself?   I'm assuming that at least some of the Google programmers and engineers own these devices and are seeing this problem firsthand?

Why the silence from Google about this issue?   And, when they do fix it, there had better be an apology from Google.  There should also be compensation for the thousands of us who now own these devices because most of us use them primarily as photo displays.

I own 30+ Google devices and was considering the new Pixel Tablet.   But, I'm holding off now.

I was also recently invited to join ss a Google Super Fan, which I did.   But, I'm not much of a fan now.

On a related note, there has been an ongoing issue with playing music on multiple Google devices...static, being out-of-sync, lag.  Yesterday I did everything I could to get Google to quit casting music.  I couldn't even tell which device was casting.  My solution was to go around the house an unplug every speaker that was attempting, badly, to play music.   I guess this all needs to be on another thread where there will be silence from Google?

Same here about reconsidering the pixel tablet. I was definitely going to buy it but after months of no fix for this major issue I don't think I will be spending $500 on a pixel tablet when it could end up having the same issue. Seriously why has this not been fixed after MONTHS, you'd think they would be able to fix it...

Google doesn't make it easy to find the posts on this topic with the "answer", but if you get on the preview program and get the update to the 12.* version, it seems to be fixed there.  I don't know when the production version (currently 11.*) will get updated -- it's been a couple of weeks.  But if you want a fix, that's it for now.

I've had my nest hub max for around two weeks.First week no issues, 2nd week i'm rebooting at least 2-4 times a day because of freezing. On my older first gen displays that ive had for years this does not happen.Only on Nest Hub Max which is really annoying.Surely you guys at google have a fix for this by now.I have impaired vision hence i bought the bigger max and the last thing you want to be doing with your sight impaired is messing around on a phone with settings everyday. So please get this sorted.

You don't have to reboot -- at least the following two work-arounds worked for me.

1. Just give the command "next" ("Hey Google, next") and it will advance to the next photo.

2. Swipe the current photo to the left to advance to the next photo.

Either of these seemed to resolve the problem temporarily....

All 3 of mine are doing the same thing. Gets stuck on a photo and I have to swipe to the next photo to get it going again. It works for awhile then gets stuck again. 1 max and 2 smaller ones. Must be a bug in an update. Or something on the cloud side where the photos are stored.

Same with mine and just started last week. Few things:

  • I've tried power cycling device
  • I've tried toggling timer settings on photo frame
    • Previously I had it at 1m. It will get stuck on a photo for hours and then at some point change before getting stuck again.
    • Sometimes when I change the setting to a new time, images start cycling inconsistently  very quickly between 5-10s. It doesn't seem to matter what the setting is. I've had this fast and inconsistent cycling when on the 30s and 1m settings

Same thing happening for me. It has to be some kind of bug. I've tried all recommended steps and it will work right for a brief period and then get stuck again.

I have a long list of things I have tried to nail down the freezing none of which have worked.  you don't need to unplug just  hey google next photo.  works on mine, or settings/ photoframe/ click one set off them back on.    exit.

Here is a list of most of the things I have tried.

things I have tried.
unplugged waited plugged back in
a soft reset.
A factory reset.
Changed the folder the pictures were displayed from
Deleted all the folders and moved pictures over again.
Showed pictures from only the Favorites album
Showed pictures from only a created folder.
Cut down the number of photos.
Added even more photos.
moved the device closer to the modem
Reset modem. Moved modem higher
changed wifi network.
deleted other home devices.

Deleted Firestick tv device.  (just started trying this one.)   Will post back if that is the one

My Nest Hub Max keeps sticking on photos on the photo frame. It moves when I ask it to. I have turned it off and back on and have rebooted from the app. I have also moved it closer to the modem in case it was too far away.

It also doesn’t show the temperature on the front screen but gives the weather when asked.

Thankyou.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for letting us know — let’s see what’s going on.

Please try changing your Photo Frame to Full Screen Clock first. Wait for a minute before switching it back to your photos.

Let me know how it goes.

It doesn't work. Question, do you have a Google display yourself? If so, how about you try this. And if you don't have one, maybe you suggest that Google give you one.

Please read the comments! We are all saying the same thing. Hubs freeze on one photo. We can unplug or even change the display to clock and other settings for a minute, but within a day it freezes again. It's obviously something on your (Google's) end. We've done all the "specialists"  repetitious suggestions. Bump it to your engineers now, please!

It didn’t work.  Still freezes up.

I have had the same issue on several hubs now for about 3 weeks.  Tried the clock suggestion awhile ago to no avail.

Hey Muddi, you don’t need “more feedback about the issue” Surely the issue is that everyone’s photo frame keeps freezing after a short time. If all of you “Community Specialists” plugged your Google Hubs in, and tried to use photo slideshow, you would get all the information you need.
It’s REALLY frustrating that this problem has occurred and your experts haven’t been able to fix it. Photo slideshow is virtually the only reason I purchased the product in the first place.

My hubs have been working fine for for several days now after an update. I rebooted them from my phone then unplugged them for a while. No issues since with my favorite album slide show

After 2 to 3 months of not being able to use it as a photo display, it does indeed seem to be working now.

Will we ever get an explanation from Google? An apology? Some sort of reimbursement?

SteveE1

Hi Juni, thank you, mine is now working as it should.

Are you able to help with activity not showing when I click on activity within the Home app? All I get is ' no events recorded '. This has happened since I got the new version of Home. Yet if I go to settings, Privacy etc, goes to web page of my account and all activity is showing

How do I update my hub?

djd711

I used to have a dedicated album that I used as a slideshow album for my display and it used to work flawlessly.

About 6 months passed where I didn't use my nest hub. I have started to use it recently but the photos regularly get stuck despite there being about 70 images in the folder.

I have tried the common fixes like using live albums only, or using favorites etc... Tried rebooting and also a factory reset but no help.

When it's stuck on a picture, I can get it to resume by swiping along to the next image but how often it gets stuck this is not a solution, it happens dozens of times per day.

I also tried deleting all of my albums and favorites and making a new album but this only worked for about an hour or so then got stuck again.

Any ideas?

Hello djd711,

Thanks for sharing details about the issue. I know the feeling when you're having issues with one of the features of the Google Nest Hub. To confirm, are you using a regular or business account? Is it a shared photo? What specific Nest Hub do you have (1st, 2nd, Nest Hub Max)? Have you tried using a different account to isolate the issue? Also, what is the firmware version of your Nest Hub?

Looking forward to your response.

Cheers,

Muddi
