Nest Hub and Nest Audio "can't read messages yet"

I just set up a Nest Hub and a Nest Audio, and when I say "Read me my last text message", the Nest Audio replies that it "can't read messages yet". I unplugged the Audio and tried it on the Hub and it said the same thing. I've searched for solutions and set all of the permissions correctly (I think?) , so I'm very confused at this point. What am I missing? Is using Google Assistant to read and respond to texts just not a function that is available on these devices?

Thanks for reaching out, @CharisD. Reading messages is not a supported feature on Google Home and Nest devices. This is only available on phones and smart watches yet. The only time that your Google Nest Hub and Google Nest Audio can read or send a text message is when this action is added to your Routines. You can pass this feature request on to our product team by sharing your feedback on your device or in the Google Home app.
