Few days back I found my 1st gen Nest hub with a blank screen. Restart didn't fix, just bought up an indefinite spinner instead of just blank screen. Assistant responds either with "there was a glitch" or "hmm, something went wrong" when asked anything.
Have resetted it to factory defaults twice - the setup process goes as expected, but ends again with a blank gray screen.
I can still cast to it - audio plays, video doesn't. The controls work, mute and vol up/down show up on screen when pressed, but the main content area stays gray blank, except after restarting, when the forementioned spinner pops up.

Are you using the original power adapter that came with your device? Try using a different power outlet in your house and try to reboot. You can try these steps as a workaround:

I have already done the reset procedure twice.
